Quote of the Week

"Easy, Easy!"

 - County Market's Art Awerkamp's stern response as WGEM's Carlos Fernandez told us that Hy-Vee's Steve Labs "was a good guy and great to work with".  If Tommy Lasorda can bleed Dodger Blue, can Art bleed County Market (I guess) Green?

Dark River Derby Coalition
Dark River Derby Coalition

Heather Sommer (and perhaps a friend or two) will tell us all about the Dark River Derby Coalition which is the first women's flat-track roller derby league in Quincy.  Their inaugural exhibition bout, "Red, White and Bruised", will take place on Saturday, July 2nd at Scottie's Fun Spot.  From their website (www.darkriverderby.com): "Founded in the summer of 2010 by a group of adventurous (some might say crazy) women, the DRDC was formed with one goal: to light up the banks of the Mississippi with the live action, excitement, spectacle and sport of women's roller derby."  Should be an interesting program so make sure you find a seat for Quincy's Finest Hour.

Friday Last

An informational program on the Weather Radio thanks to the teamwork of Jon Marshall and Steve Labs from Hy-Vee and Brian Inman and Carlos Fernandez from WGEM.  Jon spoke about the popularity of the program at Hy-Vee, both locally and regionally, while Brian covered the issue from the WGEM standpoint.  Several good questions and answers including who makes the determination and when the decision is made to break in from normal television or radio programming for weather reports.  Carlos told us their policy is to do so on tornado warnings.  As he noted, they "get on and stay on" when any part of their viewing or listening area is in danger.  Good stuff.  Thanks to Steve and Carlos for setting up the program and for introducing.

This & That

Skip Reuter offering a fine prayer and Fred Lauder leading the pledge...  President Kent Anderson acknowledging the great turn-out for the June 15th Family Picnic and Flag Day Concert.  Between 60-75 Exchangites/family members attended the event - by far the best participation we've ever seen at the picnic.  Thanks to Dan Veihl and the Butcher Block for providing the good food and beverage.  Gengenbacher's Shaved Ice Shack providing shaved ice treats before and after we handed out flags at the concert...  Jeff Dorsey handling the duties of presenting an American flag to the West Point graduate (whose names escapes me) at the concert.  Thanks, Big Dog...  Dennis Koch welcoming concert attendees on behalf of the Exchange Club...  Speaking of Dennis, he will be in Rock Island this weekend representing our club at the District Convention.  Thanks for all you do, Dennis...  President Kent putting out another request for help with programs and the anniversary celebration.  It was noted that the incoming National President will be with us when we celebrate on August 19th...  President Kent wishing all men a Happy Father's Day...  Quincy Superintendent of Schools Lonny Lemon telling us about the humorous way former superintendent Dr. Joe Bocke explained to him when to cancel school because of snow - if the dog goes out; school.  If the dog refuses to go out; cancel...  Carlos Fernandez reminding us of the seventh Great River Honor Flight this week out of Hannibal.  With this trip, over 215 veterans from our community have participated in the great program...  Dave Rees had the right 50/50 ticket but picked the wrong card (eight of diamonds) so the pot grows.  Should be over $900 with 21 cards remaining...  Bruce Broemmel twisting tails and telling about a poor fellow whose wife helped him pick up 73 votes so he could become president of his country club...  Hard to believe this week will be President Kent's last meeting (in which he opens and closes the meeting)...  Special recognition on Russ & Annette Goehl's 54th anniversary on Wednesday.  That's great!  Congratulations...  July 4th just around the corner; don't forget the fireworks display will be at the Veterans Home this year as part of the Home's 125th Anniversary celebration.  Should be great!  Hope you plan on attending...  That's all for now, 'til next time, may God's love, grace, and peace be with you and the ones you love.
