Our speaker Rob Ebbing announced that Wednesday nights at the Gems will be two-for-one beer nights which led to Art Awerkamp asking if there "were no Wednesday night games this year?" Hard to get one by Art... |

| This Friday | |
The 59th Annual Book of Golden Deeds Award. Please join us for a special program as we pay tribute to Mr. Tom Beherns for his Golden Deeds. Involved in numerous activities and touching the lives of many in our community, Tom is certainly a worthy recipient of our most distinguished award. Hopefully about a dozen of our past recipients will be joining us for the day as well. Please be early (11:45ish) as we will start the program at least 10 minutes earlier than normal. (Remember there are numerous parking spots on the west side of ABVI. Access that area by the road on the north side of the building.) Gary Peters will serve as master of ceremonies and Jared Haugh will deliver the keynote address. Please join us Friday for truly Quincy's Finest Hour. |

Rob Ebbing, Executive Director of the Oakley-Lindsey Center and General Manager of the Quincy Gems gave us the low-down on the upcoming season. Coach Chris Martin was unable to join us and "Chicken Man" Dave Comer had surgery (we were told it went well) in St. Louis so he was out as well. Rob presented some great information on the Gems operation that began in 1996. 76 former Gems players have been drafted by the major Leagues and seven have made it to the big show. Five of them are still playing professionally. Coach Martin will be assisted by Brandon DeJaynes this year. The season begins on June 2nd. The prospect League will have two divisions with the Gems in the Western division. There will be several Fireworks nights including June 4th, July 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th and again on July 17th which is Military Night. Rob noted that the Gems are also looking for host families to share their homes with the players during their stay in Quincy for the season. |

| Urgent Need for Macker Busters | |
We are up to 61 Gus Macker Busters (court referees). Still need about 30. Again - If you can't Bust, please supply us with the name of a person who could work the weekend. Each Gus Buster will receive a fanny pack, two t-shirts, a hat, an official's whistle, and a stop watch. In addition, Gus Busters will receive $25 for each day that they officiate and a bonus of $25 for officiating both days for a total of $75 for the weekend. This is a great chance for a son, daughter, niece, nephew, or grandchild to pick up some extra money, not to mention the wonderful experience. They need to be 16 or older. They can sign up and work together with a friend. Thank you. |

Rev. Ron Fritts with the payer and Skip Bright leading the pledge... President Kent Anderson congratulating Jeff Dorsey on the birth of Jeff's fourth grandchild but first granddaughter. That's the good stuff, man... My thanks to Jeff for taking notes for me last week. As always, appreciate the help, Jeff... President Kent congratulation Rev. Ron Fritts on his recent ordination - again... President Kent also thanking John Johannes and his committee for their outstanding work with the Youth of the Month, Youth of the Year, and Bud Willer/ACE awards. Great bunch of young men and women we were able to recognize... President Kent telling us about a thank you from Youth of the Year, Grace Holthaus, and from Arts Quincy for hosting the All American Kid awards... Club received a nice note from Bill Barry telling us he is rehabbing in Florida and that he is walking. Important to Bill that we know he will not be able to work Macker this year. God bless you, Bill... Our thanks to Dave Poland and John Johannes for leading our efforts to hand out flags at Dogwood over the weekend. Dave not able to join us but left the duties in the capable hands of John Johannes... Dave Poland running a half-marathon last weekend. Most in the club wondering why in the heck he would do that... Jeff Dorsey reporting that Rich Lavery was so late he was a no show... Board meeting this Monday, May 6th. 11:45 a.m. at The Pier. All members welcome to attend... Bruce Broemmel twisting tails... Curt Moore had the right ticket but picked the wrong card (ace of clubs) so the pot grows. $640 on the line when we resume the drawing on 5/13 (no drawing at Golden Deeds)... Jeff Dorsey the big winner of the Gems Party Club Drawing: Jeff wins a party for 16 people in the Party Deck on June 4th with 32 complementary beers. The Big Dog claims he'll have to find a date on that evening since he "can only handle 16 beers a night"... That's all for now, 'til next time, may God's love, grace, and peace be with you and the ones you love. |
