Quote of the Week

"You guys are quite the enlightened group."

65th/100th Anniversary

Please note that due to a scheduling conflict, the April 29th event to celebrate the Club 65th anniversary and the national's 100th will be rescheduled.  (The new date has not been established yet.)  This means that we will now have a Noon meeting on the 29th.  As our celebration chairman plan the event, they are still looking to speak with anyone who has old pictures or memorabilia related to the Club.  Please see Jared Haugh or Gary Peters if you have any questions.

Macker Meeting Thursday (4/14)
GusThe weekly Gus Macker meetings have been moved from Tuesday evenings to Thursday evenings.  This Thursday will be the first one.  5:30 p.m. at "The Church of the Dock" as Co-Chairman Mel Dillman noted.  This is a huge event and our biggest fundraiser mind you.  We need all "hands on deck".  There are many needs to fill yet but our most immediate at this point is the court sponsorships and Gus Busters.  As you should know, we are down a major sponsor this year ($5,000) so we need to make up as much of that as possible through court sponsorships ($300 each).  We are struggling to find Gus Busters as well.  As of Monday (4/11) we had about 24 signed up but need about 90.  It is crucial that all Exchangites either sign up to Bust or recruit someone to do so in your place.  Contact Kevin Curran, Dave Rees, Scott Westhaus, or myself if you need more information on Busting.
This Friday

Park District

A busy agenda this Friday.  Relatively new Quincy Park District Executive Director Dan Gibble will make his debut in front of the club to tell us about the current status and future plans of the Park District.  Prior to Dan though, we'll kick-off the 2011 Gus Macker Tournament by recognizing all our major sponsors.  Macker King Scott McNeal expected to join us.  And, before that, we'll award the Bud Willer Scholarship Award ($1,000 for post secondary education) to a local high school senior who has overcome significant adversity to graduate.  Lots of good stuff.  See you Friday for Quincy's Finest Hour!

Friday Last

Pinch-hitting for Maggie Strong, Kelli Langston told us all about the Midsummer Arts Faire.  Kelli is president of the event which will take place in Washington Park on June 24th, 25th, and 26th.  Kelli detailed the many aspects of the Faire and reminded us of the huge economic impact the Midsummer Arts Faire, and the arts in general have in our region.  Interesting to note that only 50 artists are selected to participate in the event (thus the phrase "juried fine art exhibition and sale").  About half of those are local artists.  The Midsummer Arts Faire seems to have a little bit of something for everyone.  Travis Brown with the good introduction.

Youth of the Year

Congratulations Grace Holthaus!

Grace was our March Youth of the Month and has now been selected as our Youth of the Year.  Grace picks up a cool $1,000 scholarship and will represent our club at the district level Youth of the Year competition.  If selected at the district level she'll win more scholarship money and move on to the national competition where she could win a $10,000 scholarship.  Not a bad chunk of change!  Dr. Len Biallas made the presentation and read us excerpts from her paper on her volunteer work at Blessing Hospital.  Good stuff.  Joining Grace for the presentation were her mom, Barb, and Quincy High School Principal Danielle Edgar.  Congratulations and good luck, Grace!

Newest Man of Action

Welcome to the Exchange Club of Quincy, John "Skip" Bright!  Skip is the "Newest Man of Action" and was sponsored by Curt Moore.  Skip has two sons, Josh and Seth, and two grandchildren.  He is currently a financial consultant and a former banker.  Mel Dillman and Jeff Dorsey conducted another tear-jerking induction.

This & That

Jim Benz requesting a little common sense in D.C. (Amen!) and for a blessing on our food during the prayer.  Adams County Sheriff Brent Fischer leading the pledge...  President Kent Anderson informing us of a thank you from Quincy Notre Dame for our donation to their annual campaign...  Good to see Tony Nutt in the crowd.  Tony carried the title "Newest Man of Action" for only two weeks before Skip Bright earned the moniker.  Rumor has it that Skip may only have the title for a couple weeks as well.  Good to see some new faces in the crowd...  Please keep former Exchangite Larry Ehmen in your thoughts and prayers.  Larry is in a Springfield hospital after suffering from a "brain bleed".  We wish Larry the best.  He's a good man...  Carlos Fernandez telling us about the next Great River Honor Flight taking place on Tuesday, April 11th.  You can be part of the welcoming back party that evening at the Quality Inn and Suites in Hannibal.  Tentative arrival time is 9:30 p.m. but more up-to-date information to be posted on WGEM's website as it becomes available.  Next flight is scheduled for May 17th after this one.  Great work with the Honor Flight, Carlos.  We should all be proud this great program has made its way to our community...  GIVEAKIDAFLAGTOWAVE Chairman Dave Poland reminding us again that the Dogwood Parade is on the last day of April.  8,000 flags available to be passed out...  Mike Lavery had the right ticket but picked the wrong card (jack of hearts) so the pot grows.  Over $600 this week and 29 cards left...  Bruce Broemmel twisting tails and Sonny Christner lending a helpful hand.  Great joke, Sonny...  Look for President Kent to inform us of any April board meeting activity this week...  That's all for now, 'til next time, may God's love, grace, and peace be with you and the ones you love.
