Quote of the Week

"Duker and Haugh Funeral Home would like to be the official sponsor."

- Jared Haugh's great line after fellow Exchangite Kelly Stupasky asked our speakers if they would be interested in hosting a Quincy Exchange Club Wiffle Ball Tournament.  Obviously much laughter followed...

A Point to Ponder

Navy Captain Owen Honors, the recently removed commanding officer of the USS Enterprise, has unofficially been proposed for honorary Quincy Exchange Club membership by Gary Peters.  Again, much laughter followed...

WIU

Please join us as we welcome Dr. Tim Van Alstine, Director of Athletics at Western Illinois University in Macomb.  Dr. Van Alstine and his staff are responsible for 15 collegiate activities at the NCAA Division I school.  While the football program participates in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, the rest of the programs compete in The Summit League.  In addition to Dr. Van Alstine, we'll recognize our January Youth of the Month.  Should be a great program.  Hope to see you Friday for Quincy's Finest Hour!

Good to be back at ABVI and learn about River City Sports Academy from Mike Giles and Nick Hiland.  Mike and Nick, along with third partner Matt Stembridge who couldn't be with us, have opened the new business in what most of us know as the old Sears building (just south of Selby Implement on North 24th).  RCSA specializes in sports training.  Their 23,000' facility contains six batting cages, two infields, a weight room and a golf driving range.  Baseball, softball, momentum training, and motion analysis are their current focuses but the future will bring more including clinics, camps, and leagues.  We wish them the best!  Your humble editor with the introduction.

This & That

Rev. Ron Fritts with the prayer (thanking God for the gift of baseball among other blessings) and Ric Hinkamper leading the pledge...  A hoarse President Kent Anderson encouraging Exchangites to invite new men to join us (as part of the national "Stand Up America" drive).  It is important, for any number of reasons, that we get new blood involved, men.  Since January, 2009, we've added only 11 new Exchangites (and two reinstatements) to our roster.  Most of the 11 are active members but two haven't been seen in months.  How about we shoot for one new member a month in 2011?  Write down three names of men who you think might fit our mold and ask them to an upcoming meeting.  That's a start...  Look for President Kent to recap activity from the 1/10 board meeting this Friday...  Rick Veihl had the right 50/50 ticket but picked the wrong card (eight of clubs).  Pot still at $400.  Stop asking when it will grow; Art Awerkamp gets grouchy about it...  Took Tail Twister Bruce Broemmel awhile to get there but his small pox joke was a big hit...  At ABVI this Friday before the road trip to the Adams County Health Department on 1/21...  Jeff Dorsey still in Kansas City with his ailing mother who is on hospice...  Dan & Laurie Brink's daughter, Emily (a junior), is a member of the Western Illinois University Golf Team.  Dan told me when they were making a college visit to Western, prior to Emily committing, they had an opportunity to meet with Dr. Van Alstine.  Either Dan or Laurie asked how much interaction their daughter as a student athlete would have with him.  Dr. Van Alstine was frank when he said very little.  In fact, he told them that if he was meeting with one of the kids it usually wasn't for a good reason.  Fortunately for Emily, she has more of her mom's genes than dad's and has not had any meetings with Dr. Van Alstine...  Is it just me or does it seem that either Rick Veihl, Dick Wentura, or Rich Howell win the 50/50 every other week?  Lucky son of a guns...  Forgot to remind you the last couple of weeks that we lost three great Exchangites in 2010; Gil Feld (1/7), Wayne McLaughlin (9/13), and John Ortwerth (11/14).  We were blessed to have called them friends...  That's all for now, 'til next time, may God's love, grace, and peace be with you and the ones you love.
