Quote of the Week

"It is an honor to individually serve you alcoholic beverages."

- Bartender Steve Peters' response to the round of applause Exchangites gave Steve for serving as our host and bartender at the Quincy Boat Club.

A Point to Ponder

I purchased a quick pick for the multi-state lottery over the weekend.  At that time the jackpot was $290 million but it reached $355 before the drawing Tuesday night.  First time I played the lottery (other than or 50/50 Ace of Spades game) in several years.  Why is it that I and many others only play when it gets to be over $250 million or so?  I guess in my subconscious I just don't think a measly $50 million or so would be enough...

This Friday

RCSA

We'll resume back at ABVI and learn about River City Sports Academy.  RCSA is a new business started by buddies Mike Giles, Nick Hiland, and Matt Stembridge that specializes in sports training; specifically baseball at this time but others (I assume) down the road.  Their location is 2011 North 24th.  See you Friday for Quincy's Finest Hour!

Road Trip Friday Last

Nearly 50 men joined us the Quincy Boat Club for our Holiday Celebration on a beautiful New Years' Eve.  The food, compliments of Hy-Vee Catering, was excellent and the beverages, thanks to bartender Steve Peters, were refreshing.  Jeff Dorsey, dedicating The News to our late friend John Tripp, did a bang-up job.  Maybe one misfire but overall a great performance!  Thanks to Steve, Jeff, and Dave Liggett from Hy-Vee for making the event special.  Oh yeah, and what a treat for us to hold the meeting at the Quincy Boat Club.  A great place and we are most appreciative for them allowing us to meet at their facility.

This & That

Carlos Fernandez with the prayer and Rich Zeidler leading the pledge...  Lucky and Good Question Asker Dick Wentura had the right ticket but the wrong card (nine of spades).  Art Awerkamp informed me that the pot is still at $400 and will be there for awhile...  Please keep Jeff Dorsey, his mother, and the rest of their family in your prayers.  Jeff left earlier this week for Kansas City and what he believes will be the last days or perhaps hours for his ailing mother...  Made me sad to see that our community is losing the Salvation Army's Major Alan Wurtz.  The good Major was apparently told just days or weeks after his December 3rd visit to our club that he and his wife have been reassigned to the Chicago area.  Remember how much to told us he and his family loved Quincy and how happy they were to be extended?  A tough blow but as always, they will meet that challenge.  His last day in Quincy will be February 1st.  If you haven't already, how about giving him a call to thank him for the great job he has done here and wishing him the best in the future.  Truly a good man and one of God's faithful servants...  I'd like to thank Mel Dillman for keeping me informed about the goings-on of club members.  I appreciate it when someone shares information with me, as Mel does often, that I can in turn share for the greater good.  Please send me a note if you are aware of a club member who (as a few examples) has been promoted, received some type of award, retired, or has been blessed with a new child or grandchild.  Please don't assume I know.  Thanks...  President Kent Anderson now on the downhill side of his year.  I haven't given him a hard time in several months now but do need to razz him for his choice of words when calling Perry Terwelp forward to do the 50/50.  President Kent's exact words were "Perry, you want to make someone happy?"  To which some unidentified Exchange yelled "Line up, boys!"  Now that was funny...  That's all for now, 'til next time, may God's love, grace, and peace be with you and the ones you love.

Century Trivia

An early national program that was embraced enthusiastically by Exchangites all across the country was Service to Aviation. Exchange fostered the cause when most Americans scoffed at the flimsy contraptions of wire and fabric that hobbled into the air and regarded those who risked their lives by flying these achines as either fools or daredevils. At Harter's urging, the 12th National Exchange Club Convention in Toledo, Ohio, produced a resolution in support of aviation, thus making Exchange the only organization of business and professional men to recognize the immense potential of aviation as a means to strengthen and advance the nation.
