Quote of the Week

"Do you ever get up in the morning and wonder what you are going to wear today?"

 - Gary Peters' question to our guest, Major Allan Wurtz.  Obviously, much laughter followed.  Runner up goes to Scott Westhaus who followed a Dick Wentura question with, "What kind of question was that?"  As we all know, Dick usually only asks good questions...

A Point to Ponder
Sick of winter yet?  Several days of temperatures under freezing have already made me forget the great fall we had.  Is there any way we could move Quincy just a few hours south?

December 10, 2010
This Friday

Please join us for the 48th Annual Hearing Impaired Christmas Party.  As is the custom during this great event, we'll hear a bit about the program, be treated to a short play by the kids, and then watch as Santa brings the kids gifts.  This is one of the best programs of our year, especially if you have never had the pleasure of experiencing it.  Something special about watching these students during the play and as Santa walks in.  See you Friday for Quincy's Finest Hour!

This Friday Evening
Consider this your last chance to sign up for the Spousal Christmas Party.  You know the details by now - open bar at 6:00 p.m., dinner at 7:00 p.m., and entertainment at 8:00 p.m.  It is all FREE and at the Quincy Holiday Inn.  You must call Dennis Koch (316-9300) immediately if you have not signed up and are planning on attending.  As President Kent Anderson noted last week, widows of deceased Exchangites are invited to join us for this event as well.  Extend the invitation if you are close to one of these ladies.

A great update on the Salvation Army and Kroc Center by Major Alan Wurtz.  Major Wurtz has been in Quincy for 8 years and as of June, was extended for another four.  Rare because most assignments in the Salvation Army are for only four years.  Major Wurtz spoke on how national statistics on unemployment and the economy in general do affect our area.  He backed that statement up by telling us that 50%-60% of those recently seeking help from the organization have never done so before.  The Salvation Army served over 860 meals at Thanksgiving alone.  Throughout the meeting a time-lapse video on the construction of the Kroc Center played.  Plans call for the center to be open next June or July.  A genuine pleasure to have Major Wurtz with us.  Yours truly suffering the wrath of a vocal crowd during the introduction.

This & That

Rev. Jim Totsch with the good prayer and Sonny Christner leading the pledge...  Charlie Doane the guest of Dick Wentura.  Charlie of course, is a former Exchangite and a tireless volunteer for the Salvation Army...  President Kent read a resignation letter from retired judge Mark Schuering.  Judge Schuering cited his new life as a retiree being as busy as ever.  We will miss him...  Art Awerkamp immediately remarked "We are going to need to find a new judge now."  I suppose it is good to have one near, just in case...  A reminder that the new fiscal year started December 1st...  Please keep Jeff Dorsey and Rick Cole in your prayers.  Both appear fine now but had health scares that sent them to the hospital last week...  The same Art Awerkamp collecting for the waitress gift.  If you already donated, thank you.  If not, please do so this week...  Hats off to Charlie Ledbetter for organizing the "GIVEAKIDACHANCE Christmas Dinner last Friday evening and for dealing with some adversity.  It was a great event and we thank the several other Exchangites and spouses who helped make the event a success...  Immediate Past President Kevin Curran administering the 50/50.  Rich Howell had the right ticket but picked the wrong card (king of hearts).  Pot still at $400.  Much groaning that the pot hasn't grown.  That was until Art threatened to take it back to $200...  Bruce Broemmel twisting tails and collecting $3 from Elvin Townsend for two different wisecracks.  Sonny Christner helping Bruce out with a joke...  For those of you "who do not get out often", the new Kroc center is located between 4th & 5th streets on Broadway...  Please keep in mind that we will conduct our club Christmas/New Year's Party at the Quincy Boat Club on December 31st.  A luncheon that will include a whole hog roast...  That's all for now, 'til next time, may God's love, grace, and peace be with you and the ones you love.
