Quote of the Week

"We'll see if he still feels that way after he sees how much playing time Karlee gets this year."

- Quincy University Women's Basketball Coach J.D. Gravina's great line after yours truly introduced him as "my new favorite coach" (because of the full scholarship he has given my daughter).

A Point to Ponder

While the news of John Ortwerth's death last Sunday was obviously sad, it brings a certain degree of joy as well.  No longer will John suffer from the scavenging of his mind and body by Alzheimer's.  This terrible disease stole the last several years of John's wonderful life but no longer can it harm him; he is now free.  For his loving family and many legion of friends, this is a comforting thought.

Mr. John Ortwerth

10/21/1931 - 11/14/2010

We lost a good man and a true gentleman on Sunday, November 14th when Mr. John "J.O." Ortwerth passed away at the age of 79 years old.  I suppose there are many kind words or phrases that could be used to describe the good life lived by John.  You have probably read or heard many of them over the last several days and they are all correct.  I respectfully offer two words that best describe the man I knew and admired; love and humility.  John loved God, his precious wife, his beautiful family, his country - this community in particular, the Exchange Club of Quincy, education - Quincy University specifically, the young, the old, the misfortunate, and of course athletics - be it playing, coaching, or officiating.  He approached all of these with love and humility.  Among his many accomplishments (specifically in our organization) John was a past president and an Exchangite of the Year.  He was instrumental in the origination of the Adopt-A-Grandparent Parent program, Special Olympic Basketball, and served as a Gus Macker Head Buster for many years.  We are a better club and better men because John Ortwerth walked amongst us.  Our sincere condolences to Joanne and their awesome family.

This Friday

Symphony of TreesMrs. Cindy Strock will tell us about the 10th annual Symphony of Trees which will take place between December 2nd and the 5th at The Ambiance.  Started in 1992, the Symphony of Trees has raised and distributed over $475,000 to support music education and appreciation in the tri-state area.  A quick check on the internet found that figure and a few other interesting facts such as annual attendance is approximately 5,000 and over 500 community volunteers staff the four-day event.  They have a whooping 25 committees and over 200 committee members.  Wow!  In addition, we'll welcome a Youth of the Month from Quincy Notre Dame High School.  See you Friday for Quincy's Finest Hour!

The Big Basketball Preview.  A pleasure to have seven of the eight head basketball coaches (between the two high schools and two higher education institutions in Quincy) with us.  Quincy University Men's Coach Marty Bell, QU Women's Coach J.D. Gravina, John Wood Community College Women's Coach Norm Rodriquez, Quincy High School Boy's Coach Sean Taylor, QHS Girl's Coach Greg Altmix, Quincy Notre Dame High School Boy's Coach Scott Douglas, and QND Girl's Coach Eric Orne all in attendance.  JWCC Men's Coach Mike Elbe would have been but an out of town game prevented his visit.  The coaches told us a bit about their teams, expectations, and schedules.  In addition, several members of the sports media joining us for the program.  Good stuff.  We wish all the coaches and their respective teams tremendous success this winter.

This & That

Jim Benz with the nice prayer last week and Jerry Ebbing leading the pledge...   Hal Broadwater, Gary Peters, Kirk Frageman, and Dr. Joe Bocke all brought guests (my apologies for not getting all their names down)...  Dennis Koch recapped the mid-year conference and reminded us that the National Exchange Club will celebrate the 100th year of Exchange on March 27, 2011.  The next national convention will be in Detroit...  Please note that due to a scheduling snafu, the December 10th Spousal Christmas Party location has moved from Stoney Creek Inn to the Holiday Inn.  More details later...  Art Awerkamp had the right 50/50 ticket but picked the wrong card (six of clubs).  Soon the pot will grow...  Please keep in mind that we will be collecting for the waitress gift within the next few weeks.  Start saving your pennies now.  Traditionally, we encourage a crisp $20 bill but four raggedy old $5 bills will work too.  Julie does a great job for us - whether at ABVI or on the road so let's show our class and appreciation...  I am late this week with the Exchangite,  It has been another crazy week and adding to the dilemma was the self-induced pressure to write comforting words about a man I so admired.  I truly struggled with this and it wasn't until after listening to the eloquent words of Rev. Ron Fritts at the memorial service did I feel worthy and ready to write.  My words will never be as clever as my late friend, John Tripp, but they will always be sincere  Hopefully they will come easier and a bit faster next week...  That's all for now, 'til next time, may God's love, grace, and peace be with you and the ones you love.
