Quote of the Week

"I love my job more now than when I walked in the door."

-  TTFD Assistant Chief and Firefighter of the Year Darren Smith's line during his acceptance speech.

A Point to Ponder

Like most of you, darn glad to see election day come and go!  Enough said.

November 5, 2010
Veterans Parade This Saturday

Please plan on helping carry our big American Flag during the Veterans Parade this Saturday, November 6th.  We'll meet somewhere between 16th & 18th of Maine Street just a bit after 9:00 (we are #20).  Parade starts at 10:00 a.m. and goes from 12th & Maine to 5th & Maine.

Road Trip This Friday

Board Office

We'll observe our annual Veterans Day Program this Friday with a road trip to the Quincy Board of Education Office.  (1416 Maine Street is the address, which is just east of Quincy Junior High School - known to many as the old medical clinic.  Please enter from south side of the building as we will meet in a conference room on the lower level.)  Be early as we'll start the program a bit earlier than normal.  Bring a veteran as we pay tribute to those who served our country.  In addition, tours of QJHS will be offered after the program to those interested.  See you Friday for Quincy's Finest Hour!

Friday Last

First we presented the second annual Firefighter of the Year award (more on that below) and then Quincy Herald-Whig Senior Writer Doug Wilson shared his pre-election perspective.  Nearly a week later it appears Doug was right on the mark with his predictions (except for the governor's race).  We appreciate Doug sharing his time and talents with us.  Carlos Fernandez with the introduction.

Firefighter of the Year

Congratulations to Tri-Township Fire Department (TTFD) Assistant Chief Darren Smith for being named the Firefighter of the Year.  Darren is a 21 year veteran of the TTFD force and is responsible for the day to day operations of the department.  Darren received the Illinois Firefighter Medal of Valor in 1994 when his efforts saved the life of a grain bin worker.  He is certified as a SCUBA diver, a member of the Quincy Fire Department Water Response Team, a fire investigator, and a certified HazMat technician.  As his chief says of Darren, "the best thing about him is that he believes in what he is doing.  He puts the job ahead of everything else because he believes deeply that all those we serve are depending on the fire department to help them at all times."  Several firefighters on hand for the presentation including TTFD Chief Rick Zaerr, Quincy Fire Department Chief Joe Henning, and last year's recipient, Captain Tom Bentley.

This & That

Jim Benz with the prayer and Hal Broadwater leading the pledge...  Your humble editor announcing that Max Johnson now resides at the Illinois Veterans Home.  Max can be found in Markword 2; he'd love a visit from you...  Please note the November Board Meeting has been pushed back a week.  We'll now meet on Monday the 15th.  Same time (11:45 a.m.) and location (The Pier)...  Kudos to Mel Dillman and his crew for a great Fall Brawl.  Small crowd on hand but a great evening with outstanding food.  That steak was one of the best I ever had...  Doug Wilson has a great sense of humor and showed that with several great lines last week including, "I thought there would be more applause when Carlos stopped speaking."  And, "If you live in a median, you have more troubles than what district you live in."  Good stuff...   Jim Benz announcing the Tin Dusters had 913 cars participate in their fall color show and subsequently donated $13,600 to Camp Callahan.  More good stuff...  John Wood Community College President Tom Klincar passing out basketball schedules and passes for both the men and women's programs...  Frank Hays had the right ticket but picked the wrong card (sever of hearts)...  Bruce Broemmel twisting tails...  Sorry so late this week.  Stuff happens...  That's all for now, 'til next time, may God's love, grace, and peace be with you and the ones you love.
