Quote of the Week

"Sleep Well, Your Air Force is Awake."

 - Air Force brat Jeff Dorsey telling us about the sign you can find outside of nearly every Air Force base around the country.

A Point to Ponder

How many times do we take the birthing process for granted and forget the miracle that it really is? Please take a moment to thank God for the beautiful children and grandchildren He has blessed you with. And then pray for those, like Tiffany and Rome Frericks, who have shown tremendous strength and courage in dealing with the adversity God handed them. I pray you are inspired to be a better person or parent or grandparent because of Tiffany's visit last Friday.

Contact Mel Dillman Regarding Fall Brawl

Only a handful of Exchangites signed up for Saturday's Fall Brawl last week but you can still attend by contacting Chairman Mel Dillman ASAP. (228-1208 or mdillman5905@sbcglobal.net.)  $15 a person and guests are invited. Drinks and appetizers at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:30ish. Not sure of the entertainment but we'll have something nice.  Cedar Club Country Club is the location. All Exchangites are invited to attend but consider this a special invitation to all new members. Good food, good drink, and a great way to meet your fellow Exchangites
This Friday

FirefighterWe'll close out the last Friday in October, also known as Fire Prevention Month, with the second annual Firefighter of the Year award. It is certainly most appropriate that we honor those who put it on the line for us every day. We'll have members from the Quincy Fire Department and Tri-Township Fire Department with us for sure and perhaps a few others from area departments. Not sure who our speaker will be after the award presentation but you can bet on something good. See you Friday for Quincy's Finest Hour!
Friday Last

Great to have Air Force Veteran Dick McKinney with us and to get an inside look at the Veterans Day Parade.  Dick, along with Jim Ponsot (who unfortunately was not able to be with us due to illness), restarted the Quincy Veterans Day Parade in 2008 - after a 35 year absence.  The 2010 version will be carried out on Saturday, November 6th.  In addition to another fly-over by a C130 from the 182nd Air Wing, Dick promised something "a little extra in the sky" this year.  Jeff Dorsey, who serves on the parade committee and was instrumental in the restart, with the introduction.

CDH Awareness

Prior to the program we had the privilege of hearing from Tiffany Frericks (wife of Rome) about Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) and Cadan's Halloween Carnival for CDH (which was held this past Sunday). Tiffany shared the heart-wrenching story of the birth and short life of their son, Cadan. Both Tiffany and Rome are now dedicated to raising awareness and funds for CDH research in honor of Cadan. CDH occurs when the diaphragm of a baby does not form properly which subsequently compromises lung and heart development. You can learn more about this terrible disease that occurs in one in 2,000 births at www.breathofhopeinc.com.

Youth of the Month

Congratulations to Quincy High School's Dejan Vrtikapa for being named our October Youth of the Month. Dejan currently holds a 4.5366 GPA is ranked first in his class of 526. He is involved in Quiz Bowl, Math Team, National Honor Society, Beta Club, the Tennis team, and as QHS Counselor Mindy Jackson noted during the introduction, Dejan is a spirited leader of the student cheering section at many sporting events. Bo and Valentina are the proud parents. Mike Llewellyn introduced Mindy. Also good to have QHS Principal Danielle Edgar with us.

This & That

Jared Haugh with the prayer and Sonny Christner leading the pledge... Sonny also giving us an Adopt-A-Grandparent update. We have 16 kids from St. Dominic's participating at the Veterans Home. Though the number of kids is down a bit this year, Sonny reports the kids and the residents from the Home are having a ball. The program meets the first Wednesday of every month from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Veterans Home. In November they'll meet in Smith Hall but Lippincott Hall is their normal meeting site. Check it out sometime... President Kent Anderson reminding members that dues are due. The new fiscal year for the club starts December 1st and we'd like to have all balances at zero as we enter the new year. As a reminder, yearly dues are $440... Rick Veihl had the right card for the second week in a row but picked the wrong card (four of spades). Pot still holding at $400 for now... Don't forget to make the call to Mel Dillman and join us for a great Fall Brawl Saturday night... That's all for now, 'til next time, may God's love, grace, and peace be with you and the ones you love.
