2010-11
Quote of the Week
"Frank Hays just volunteered to be House Chairman."

 - Mel Dillman, who is the House Chairman, made this remark after a despairing remark by Frank about the ABVI banquet room.
A Point to Ponder
If President Kent Anderson knocked down a two liter of regular or diet Mountain Dew at 11:00 a.m. every Friday morning, would he sound more energetic by Noon?  Just wondering.

September 3, 2010
This Friday
Blue DevilsBack at ABVI for the gridiron report.  Week one of the high school season saw both Quincy HighQND Football School and Quincy Notre Dame put up impressive victories.  (I know several fellow Exchangites took in the QND game vs. Hannibal.  Best high school football game I have ever seen; bar none!  Sorry if you left early.)  CS WildcatQuincy University opens their schedule Thursday night in Carbondale vs. Southern Illinois and Culver-QU HawkStockton opens Saturday in Canton vs. Central Methodist.  Join us as we welcome the head football coaches from Quincy High School (Rick Little), Quincy Notre Dame (Bill Connell), Quincy University (Bill Terlisner) and Culver-Stockton College (Cameron Keller).  See you Friday for Quincy's Finest Hour!
Road Trip Last Friday
A nice road trip to Sunset Home to hear Sunset's story and visit with fellow Exchangite Max Johnson who calls the facility home.  Few seemed to mind the crowded quarters as we listened to Christine Hobson tell us about the place that prides itself on providing care and shelter for the elderly.  Started over 100 years ago after a gift from Mr. & Mrs. Charles Pfeiffer, Sunset now has over 182 licensed beds including a 43 bed dementia unit.  Program Chairman Gary Peters with the introduction.

SMOKE ON THE RIVER

Pig face leftCommittee meeting this Thursday - 5:30 p.m. at the Dock.  Chairman Mel Dillman provided these updates:
  • 31 teams have signed up to compete as of Tuesday (8/31) afternoon.  Still looking for nearly 40 teams.
  • It is a shame that we have only received a handful of applications for the Service Person of the Year award.  Please consider submitting an application (on-line at www.smokeontheriver.net).  Certainly you know someone who served with pride and could use a $1,200 big Green Egg grill!
  • A reminder of our presence on Facebook as well as the Quincy Herald-Whig's The Local Q (http://www.thelocalq.com/node/1743).
  • If you haven't signed up to help on the weekend, please do so this week.
  • Please sell those raffle tickets!  We are on a good pace but could always do better.
Our September 10th meeting will be at the site of the Smoke on the River event.
SOTR Team Raffle Contest
Team Dorsey is still in front but the lead has shrunk.  After four weeks, here are the cumulative totals:
Team Dorsey - 388
Team Awerkamp - 325
Team Haugh - 291
Team Peters - 191
A very respectful showing by Team Peters after a week underground.  Good work, Steve!  We'll report this week and next before declaring our winners.
50/50 ACE OF SPADES
Jeff "Big Dog" Dorsey had the right ticket but picked the wrong card (three of clubs) so the pot grows.  An incredible $2,544 this week with only 6 cards remaining!  I repeat, only the Ace of Spades matters but how crazy is it that all four aces remain in the short deck?
This & That
Rev. Jim Totsch with the good prayer and Max Johnson leading us in the good pledge...  A subdued crowd (appropriately so) at Sunset, in comparison to the previous weeks at ABVI...  Former Exchangite Don Hess the guest of Dr. Tom Klincar...  Second reading on Kelly Stupasky.  Other than Jared Haugh's "Hell, no!", Kelly passed.  Art Awerkamp sponsored him.  Let's bring him in...  Please keep former Exchangite Wayne Howe in your thoughts and prayers.  It has been reported that Wayne suffered a major stroke on Saturday morning...  Doesn't seem to matter how many times I proof the Exchangite before hitting the send button, those mistakes just don't stand out until after it is too late.  Case in point was the reference to Vic Welper being Ron Dryer's guest when it was Vic Wingerter.  Darn it!  I'll keep working to get it right...  Not sure if it was because I pointed him out last week (A Point To Ponder) or another great reason but I took note that Rich Howell was dressed sharp and stayed for the entire program at Sunset.  Impressive, Rich.  Let's duplicate it...  Secretary Cullan Duke counted 66 Exchangites on the road trip.  Whether you were there for the 50/50 or to see Max, it was a strong showing and it meant a great deal to the Purple Heart recipient...  That's all for now, 'til next time, may God's love, grace, and peace be with you and the ones you love.
