Conservation Air Patrol Betters Globe and Escapes Danger |
A routine flight doesn't exist for Peter Ragg.
The founder and director of Conservation Air Patrol scans areas around the globe through aerial surveys and environmental studies in order to bring positive change to struggling areas.
Peter has trusted Red Hen products for the last six years. He uses an sDVR in his signature red Cessna 182 as well as Blue2CAN technology for photography. These tools are used for the majority of the data that the crew gathers. His work has revealed places with residents struggling to survive, as well as areas where humans and nature coexist peacefully.
These issues were brought to light in 2004 when Peter and his wife flew with National Geographic's Mike Fay on the African "Mega Flyover", a seven-month journey across Africa to reveal the impact of the human footprint on the wild.

| One of the impacts of humans is violence.
Peter observed this personally while his wife and he were set to fly over Mozambique for a county-wide survey.
The Cessna 182 took off from an old military base when Peter's wife was startled by a bang near the rear seat. They realized it was a gunshot, and that a bullet had ripped through the toolbox behind her.
"One bullet went below my knees from right to left and hit the wing about 5 inches away from the tank," Peter said. "Another one went right through the flaps."

The shots had come from military recruits laying in a field just off the airstrip who were drunk and had fired randomly into the air.
Everyone continued the mission, bullet holes and all.
"I reported this to the government and gave them two choices: Either to stop and have a red carpet for us or I leave to South Africa and will make a press conference and the country will be downgraded on security," Peter said. "Of course they took the first option."

Peter and his company also spent three months near the islands of the Seychelles in the western Indian Ocean taking photos of the area to track environmental impacts from the recent tsunami and see more opportunity to return to document tsunami recovery as well as human conflicts.
One issue is illegal activity carried out by Somalian pirates. These things include illegal fishing off of their coasts and violent behavior toward other ships.
The power of Red Hen tools has been a major asset to the work Peter does in this area.
One of the greatest benefits has been the direct access to the data for fast action and decision making.
Peter sees value in GIS and mapping equipment for the area.
"I recommended this to the Government in the Seychelles for their fight against the pirates," Peter said. He recently spoke with officials on the island and gave them a presentation on the advantages it could have for monitoring ship activity and environmental recovery. He plans to return soon to continue work in the area.
