Rotorworks uses Red Hen technology to respond to Atlanta flooding last Fall

SubStationFlood

On Monday September 21, 2009 many Atlantans found themselves in an unprecedented state of emergency with severe flooding brought on by days of heavy rain. The flooding was responsible for at least 7 deaths, numerous major road and school closures, and around a billion dollars in damage. Not only that, it left tens of thousands without power around the Metro area. Overall at least 17 Georgia counties were affected.

As a regular aerial contractor to the state's largest utility, Rotorworks, LLC, had a helicopter on standby that was airborne with its customer's team as soon as the weather allowed for safe flight operations. Rotorworks specializes in Aerial Asset and Risk Mapping for Utility Companies so their MD 600N helicopter was already equipped with a sophisticated multimedia data collection system.

This system uses a gyro-stabilized video and a still image camera system from SWE Systems, along with Red Hen's sDVR. With this equipment, Rotorworks and its customer's team were able to quickly identify and record visual data about the components of the grid requiring immediate attention.

Upon landing, the digital video and still images were imported into an ESRI ArcGIS desktop environment using Red Hen's GeoVideo extension. When the collected video is played, a cursor moves along a "breadcrumb trail" on the map, indicating precisely where the footage was taken. Similarly, the high resolution still photos show up as points on the map.

Furthering the effectiveness of this data collection mission, was the sDVR's "feature trigger". When the video camera is focused on an asset in question, the observer hits the feature trigger and record verbal notes about the asset's condition. When reviewing the video post-mission in the mapping software, special "feature trigger" points are marked along the "breadcrumb trail" easily indicating, with audio commentary, assets that need additional analysis or some sort of repair action. Now subject matter experts from different departments can review, analyze and create work orders within the standard ESRI GIS environment.

Having attended authorized training with Red Hen, and worked with the technology over the the years, the Rotorworks team is ideally positioned to assist their customers in understanding how to maximize aerial patrol and emergency response budgets. The company also has infrared (IR), corona and LiDAR inspection capabilities.
