Practical Lessons From Major Accidents
Vol. 3, No. 7 |
Greetings!
Due to a glitch in our system, the video links in yesterday's bulletin did not work. The issue has been corrected and all of the videos are now available for viewing in our Featured Videos section. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Happy Thanksgiving! This week as we use digital turkey fryers and HD televisions while we celebrate and give thanks, we are reminded of how far technology has taken us. This month's bulletin explores a time in which technology was improving faster than our understanding of the repercussions. A Cold War-era nuclear mistake demonstrates the embarrassing and dangerous consequences of failing to accurately understand the risks behind one's actions. In addition, the ERM North America Risk Practice would like to remind everyone to be safe in the upcoming holiday season. You can view videos of turkey fryer explosions in our expanded Featured Videos section for a striking visual example of what not to do when making your holiday preparations. We also know that many of you will be traveling this week to visit family and friends, and we urge you to review AAA's road safety tips here, and Thanksgiving travel tips here. Please enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday, and if you have any risk-related needs, we will be in our Houston offices throughout November and December and are ready to take your call. |
Practical Lessons Bulletin
In 1962, a U.S. government test caused a massive electromagnetic pulse that knocked out all of the streelights in Hawaii. That same test also disabled at least eight low-orbit satellites and created a radiation belt that encircled the Earth for years. This Cold War-era embarrassment is a tale of risk and repercussions that will not be easily forgotten.
