Meet Our Vendors
Linda DeBoer of Back Lane Gardens
What makes your products unique, unusual, or special?
No two products are ever the same. Real leaves are used in my sand castings. No two leaves are the same. My soap is made in small batches, and each one varies a little. I never make two bird houses exactly the same. Every plant I grow has its own character. No two people are the same. I try to celebrate that.

What's Fresh Hazelnuts
A hazelnut is the nut of the hazel tree. Hazelnuts are sometimes referred to as a cob nut or filbert according to species.
The kernel of the seed is edible and can be used raw or roasted, or ground into a paste. The seed has a thin, dark brown skin which has a slightly bitter flavor depending on the species of hazelnut. If preferred, the skin can be removed before using.
Check hazelnuts by picking up a nut and shaking it. If it rattles inside the shell, this is an indication it has lost moisture and is now stale. The shells should be free of cracks or holes.
At room temperature, unshelled hazelnuts can last about a month. Once shelled, they should be eaten as soon as possible. Shelled hazelnuts should last unopened up to 4 months in the refrigerator or 1 year in the freezer. |

Featured Recipe
Candied hazelnuts make a great gift for the holidays. They can be used in salads or as garnish on desserts. They are also great for snacking!
Candied Hazelnuts
Ingredients
1 cup water
1 1/4 cups sugar
3/4 cup hazelnuts
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
In a small heavy saucepan simmer water with 1 cup sugar, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Preheat oven to 350° F and lightly butter a shallow baking pan. Coarsely chop hazelnuts. Stir nuts into syrup and simmer 1 minute. With a slotted spoon transfer nuts to baking pan, arranging in one layer, and reserve syrup. Cut butter into pieces.
Bake nuts in middle of oven until golden brown, about 15 minutes. Immediately add butter to nuts, tossing to coat and separate, and with a spatula transfer nuts to a plate to cool (nuts will crisp as they cool). (Nuts may be candied 2 days ahead and kept in an airtight container in a cool, dry place). |
