Abandoned No More!

38 Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord's feet, listening to His word. 40 But Martha was distracted with [q]all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, "Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me." 41 But the Lord answered and said to her, " Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; 42  but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her."  Luke 10:38-42

You could imagine the effect it had on a worrier  like Martha, when Jesus and His disciples dropped in on her unexpectedly. We never tend to be worried and bothered about truly important things. (the spiritual, eternal) It's always about how we look to people, what they think about us, etc. - We concern ourselves with that which will make us feel better about ourselves. And that is the key to understanding this story.

Like multitudes on the earth today, Martha had a problem with rejection and feeling abandoned. She felt "orphaned". It comes from the old nature we inherited from Adam. Look at what she said: 1) "Lord, do You not care...", 2) "my sister has left me", and  3) "...do all the serving alone".

Put it all together and you get a woman feeling overwhelmed with problems and having to face them on her own, because she feels like she has been abandoned and rejected.

In response, Martha told Jesus what to tell her sister Mary. She felt Mary was her problem and that if "God would just change her", Martha's problems would be "fixed". All of these things are signs we are operating in the powerless flesh and not the Holy Spirit...

1) Someone else is our problem and the key to our happiness. If God would just change them, we could be happy and serve Him better.

2) Praying the prayer, "Lord, don't You care?"

This prayer is always prayed when we are offended at God. He doesn't answer it. We are in the flesh. Don't waste your breath. Get back in faith.

3) Deciding how God is supposed to fix "the Problem" when we haven't even asked if it IS a problem! Martha didn't ask Jesus if she was supposed to be serving! She was simply overwhelmed with it. The overwhelming problem you are having wouldn't be there if you discovered you weren't even supposed to be doing it!

THE REAL LESSON

(:42) but only One Thing is necessary

It will be a liberating day for you when you realize there is just One Thing really important in life, and that by seeking Him, all the other worries vanish! Just seek Jesus, not what He can do for you. You are not alone. He has removed the orphan spirit and made you a child of God!
John 14:16-18

Delight yourself in Him. Then, you will know what you should be doing. Psalms 37:4,5 You will find rest for your soul. Matthew 11:28-30 Power will be available for every task, and every need will be met. Matthew 6:33
