Community Events Committee Overview
The first public meeting of the new Community Events Committee was held on August 24th at the Union Congregational Church. This Committee evolved from conversations among the members of Tourism Association Board and its Advisory Board. The members of the Committee are Richard Bond, Daren Cole, Rachel Gardner, Andrea Greene, Chris Ladoulis, David O'Reilly and Dave Weins. The overall objective is to bring community members together to facilitate the creation and marketing of new or enhanced events that will bring additional visitors to the Gunnison Valley and benefit our economy when most needed. The Committee aims to be an incubator for engaging the community in brainstorming and producing successful events; it will not produce or market events itself. Those who attended the meeting discussed the community's energetic efforts to win a stage of the Quiznos Pro Challenge in August 2011; the year-long celebrations being planned for the 50th anniversary of ski resort operations during 2010 and 2011; a Military Appreciation Week and College Ski Weeks during the typically slow month of January; and the Matthew Shephard Foundation Gay Ski Week in March 2011. All these events are aimed at attracting more visitors who can have a positive impact on our overall economy. |

A Farm-to-School group organized under the name 'Food for Thought' is focusing on teaching the children of Crested Butte Community School what good, nutritious, locally-grown food tastes like, why it is good for them, and how it is grown. Food for Thought supports projects which integrate program elements including: Farm-to-School lunches, nutrition education, garden-based learning, and trash reduction. The group will work closely with the administration, lunchroom staff, teachers, and students. Watch for positive changes in your child's lunch menu! Starting in September, CBCS will be serving Parker Pastures Beef once per week, and have one "Local Foods Day" each month. We need your support! If you are interested in being part of this movement, please contact Laurel Marr, tel 970-417-0990 or laurel@genesisrawfood.com
SAVE ENERGY, SAVE MONEY, INCREASE YOUR PROFITS Gunnison County Electric Association (GCEA) has received a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to offer energy audits to local businesses. Whether you own or lease your business facility, you are eligible to receive an energy audit. The audit is performed by a certified Energy Manager who will assess energy consumption from your heating/cooling systems, lighting, pumps and machines. The audit may include a blower door test or infra-red camera analysis. The commercial energy audit is the first step in learning how to lower your utility bill. The money you save on energy is money that can go towards other business expenses and profits. Contact GCEA Member Services at 970-641-3520 to schedule your energy audit today.
