Local Marketing District Tax

What is the LMD anyway?
The LMD stands for the Local Marketing District.  This district was established by a vote of Gunnison County residents in 2002 to collect a special 4% tax on overnight lodging, which in turn makes it possible to market our county on a year-round basis.  The Gunnison-Crested Butte Tourism Association is the official marketing organization for Gunnison County.

Where does the money come from?
Visitors who rent rooms in our hotels, motels, inns, B&B's, cabins, vacation homes, condos and lodges, pay a tax on that lodging, which in turn funds the marketing of Gunnison County to attract more visitors.  No money comes out of locals' pockets.

How much money are we talking about?
In 2008, the LMD collected $1,031,915.  This is up over 30% from 2003, the first year the tax was collected.  In other words ... it's working!  The more marketing we do, the more visitors come and stay here.  The majority of growth we have seen in visitors is in our summer and shoulder seasons.

On the Ballot

The "EnergySmart" referendum - County Ballot Issue 1 A - asks the voters on November 3rd to permit the County to create a "Clean Energy Local Improvement District".

This would enable the creation of an EnergySmart Loan Program in order to make energy-efficiency and renewable energy loans to individual home and business owners. The loans would be repaid through an increase on the owner's property taxes over 15-20 years. It is not a general tax increase; no one would be impacted other than the individuals taking out the "Energy Smart" loans. For more information, visit www.energysmartgunnison.org. To volunteer, contribute, donate or get involved, email yeson1a@gmail.com. This Program is voluntary and would only financially impact citizens who decide to participate.

On the Ballot

The Town Council of the Town of Mt.Crested Butte is asking for Mt. Crested Butte voters to support ballot initatives 2A, 2B and 2CThese three measures will continue to provide needed financial support for town operations and maintenance.

Ballot Issue 2A seeks to increase the sales tax levied by the Town by one per cent, which would fund the general fund of the Town and enable the Town to ensure the continued level of services provided by the Town in the fields of recreation programs offered by the Town, continued seasonal landscaping, and snow removal from streets and sidewalks within the Town.

Ballot Issue 2B seeks to continue the existing four per cent excise tax on the price paid for admission to public events; the revenue generated by said tax is restricted to use in transportation, such as the continued operation of the Mountain Express bus service upon which both local residents and visitors to our area have come to depend, and for marketing efforts to enhance the tourist economy which is vital to the continued prosperity of the Town.

Ballot Issue 2C would authorize the Town to retain and spend the full amount of revenue generated by the previously approved 5.37 mill levy for capital improvement projects which would provide the Town with revenue to address the repair and replacement of roads and streets within the Town which have deteriorated and not been repaired or replaced due to lack of funds.

 Did you know?
A slight shift in spending behavior is likely to create new jobs and yield significant incremental economic activity. According to a study through the 3/50 Project, for every $100 spent in locally owned, independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. Not only will thinking local first support a solid economic foundation for our local business owners, but the trickle down will effect the entirety of our community through increased sales tax dollars used for town projects and services, infrastructure, parks and recreation, schools, etc.

I would also like to extend our thanks to Vince Scola, who created this super saavy Think Local First logo!

Best,
Kristen
