Teaching kids that they can make a difference....

AYC logo smallGreetings!

With the Gulf Oil Spill continuing to make headlines daily, your kids are probably asking questions about the images they are seeing. It may seem difficult to tackle environmental issues like this, especially when they seem so overwhelming, but there are still things families can do to make a difference.
  • Learn as Much as You Can-Research environmental issues on the Internet. Read books and magazine articles. Discover which environmental issues your kids find most interesting.
  • Reduce Your Family's Carbon Footprint-Use the carbon footprint calculator with your kids to discover ways to reduce your carbon emissions. Use The Nature' Conservancy's carbon footprint calculator.
  • Encourage Kids to Inform Others about Environmental Concerns-Your child may be asked to prepare reports, and do research projects at school, and sometimes he will be able to choose which topics to cover. Encourage him to choose topics about the environmental issues that he's most interested in and concerned about.
  • Discuss Your Community's Environmental Profile-Go to www.scorecard.org, and get information about the environmental profile of your community. See how your community compares with others and have a great family discussion about it.
  • Follow Your Child's Lead-Your child often will discover environmental issues that interest her. When this happens, help her learn more about the topic. Find concrete, creative ways to act on your child's interest.
There are some big environmental problems in the world today, and to a child, stepping up to tackle them might seem like an intimidating proposition. Our job as parents, teachers and mentors is to reassure them that they are taking action with the help of millions of other people, and hopefully their contributions won't seem so small.

On behalf of Sarah, Cathy, and Hannah, thank you for your support of the Aspen Youth Center.

Youth Spotlight - Zander

ZanderZander comes to the Youth Center "to have fun," he says.  "You have fun here?" I ask sarcastically.  "D-yeah," he retorts.

Zander is an AYC regular who always comes in with a great attitude, ready to accept the newest challenge whether it is challenging his friends at One Against All or trying to beat me at pool.  An avid soccer, hockey, and lacrosse player, Zander manages to always have energy to share with us at the end of his day.  He is guaranteed to put a smile on your face as he begs to play dodge ball, "just one more game...pleeaaase."

In addition to some fierce dodge ball skills, Zander said that he has learned "how to treat others nicely and be respectful" since coming to the Youth Center.  Zander has been a great addition to the AYC
                                         community.  -HC

Who Are We?
The Aspen Youth Center is a private, non-profit organization whose mission is to provide a safe and supportive environment for youth to connect, learn, and grow.  We strive to create a community where youth can experience feelings of belonging, ownership, and responsibility. The activities we offer create the possibility of 'teachable moments' which serve as opportunities for staff members to coach youth in the development of life skills such as understanding emotions, managing anger, resolving conflicts, relieving stress, and solving interpersonal problems.

We want to hear from you...seriously!
