It is heartworm season. Spring is here early bringing out the mosquitoes. It is the mosquitoes that can carry the early stage of the heartworm parasite. The parasite develops in the heart 5-9 months after the dog is bitten by the mosquitoes.
The American Heartworm Association now recommends year round heartworm prevention. As always, a heartworm test should be performed annually. The Snap Test is the most popular since it tests for 3 tick-borne diseases as well.
If the heartworm blood test is positive, there is a treatment available. However, it is a long process to rid the body of the parasites.
