Obama Unveils  Grants Focused on Dropouts,
Turnaround Schools

Aiming to stem the dropout crisis and invest in a focus on turnaround schools, Pres. Obama proposed $900 million be made available next year for low-performing schools that opt for one of four reform models, which include firing the principal and even closing the campus.  Read more in the New York Times and Los Angeles Times. Also, Chicago Public Radio focused on turnarounds on its 848 program.

Voucher Plan Moves Ahead
Sen. James Meeks' controversial bill, which would allow students from low-performing Chicago Public Schools to attend private schools with public money, cleared its first legislative test. Springfield Board Approves College-prep Academy
