Harpejji Impacts Songwriting of Stevie Wonder
Stevie Wonder at BBMA
Stevie Wonder at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards
Clocking in at twenty-two Grammy awards, Stevie Wonder is the most decorated male solo artist of this age.  So it was with much rejoicing when, in the March issue of
The Marcodi Insider, we disclosed Stevie's initial discovery of the harpejji at Winter NAMM 2012 (video link).  Well, it now appears that this is developing into something even more meaningful.

First, some quick updates.  In April, Tim Meeks spent three days with Stevie at Wonderland Studios in Los Angeles, providing harpejji lessons, talking shop and eating chicken-and-waffles from Roscoe's.  By early May, Stevie received his second harpejji, this time a G16 with custom tactile markers on all of the C notes. On May 20th, he was honored with the Icon Award at the Billboard Music Awards and surprised Marcodi by closing the night with the song
Superstition on his new G16 (video link, watch at 2:30).  On August 12th Stevie played Jimmy Reed's "Baby What You Want Me To Do" on the harpejji at the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco (article link).

Now for the real news.  The real news is not that Stevie is using the harpejji, but that the harpejji is actually impacting the way Stevie is writing new songs.  In an interview with the Guardian, covered by Rolling Stone (article link), Stevie explains, "I'm still experimenting... There's a new instrument I'm learning to play called the harpejji. It's between a piano and a guitar," he said. "I'm writing really different songs with it - I have so many."  About this, inventor Tim Meeks had this to say, "Stevie's impact on the harpejji has been a tremendous development.  But the fact that the harpejji is now impacting Stevie's songwriting is an honor that's almost too much to take in."  Stevie will be headlining Bestival on September 9th on the Isle of Wight in the UK, hopefully another harpejji sighting.
