 | Announcing the 2010-2011 CVSM Musicale Series! |
| |
You're invited to the 2010/2011 CVSM Festival of Musicales

Dear Friends,
The saying goes, "variety is the spice of life." This year's Festival of Musicales certainly does illustrate that truth! We've got violins, cello, piano, keyboard, singers of various genres, clarinet, saxophones, flute, trombone, tuba, guitars and drums! The programs include Opera, Broadway, traditional Christmas music, Classical Piano trio, Dixieland, New Orleans Blues, 50s & 60s Rock 'n Roll, Smooth Jazz, Island Sounds, and even a little Jimmy Buffett for good measure! The homes are outstanding and the refreshments and company are always 1st class. I believe we've got the best of the Cumberland Valley in this series.
Two Tenors - Father and Son, Sunday, October 3, 3:00 PM. The home of Jerry and Mary Jo Kowallis is a contemporary ranch built in the 80's nestled in the lovely Penn National neighborhood. A glass roof covers an inner courtyard - certainly a first for our series! The open floor plan boasts striking contemporary furnishings. Our host, Jerry and his son Tod will provide the music. Jerry has performed extensively, including featured roles at Allenberry Playhouse, Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, Maryland Theater Opera, Trinity Players, Mercersburg Community Chorus, and St. Cecelia Choral Society. Tod has sung with the Sarasota Opera, Treasure Chest Opera, New Jersey Opera and was a young artist with the San Francisco Opera. They will sing highlights of the tenor repertoire from Opera, Broadway and even a Mario Lanza medley. I can't wait! Our hosts have asked me to mention the refreshments will be prepared by Chef Michael Mahr, a long time friend of CVSM.
An Elegant Christmas, Sunday, December 19, 3:00 PM. I am so excited we are going back to Hank and Jan Guarriello's at Christmas! To see this exceptional mansion decked out in Christmas finery is breathtaking! To add to the elegance of the afternoon, The Eaken Piano Trio will be performing Christmas favorites. They have toured all over the world and their recordings have been nominated for several Grammys. They will be joined by our own Elisabeth Turchi. Although Lisa is a "local" girl, her performing experience extends far beyond the Cumberland Valley. She has performed in Europe, NYC, Washington DC and last Christmas premiered a new work with composer and jazz pianist, Dave Brubeck. I believe the music will positively shimmer! Hank and Jan are warm, wonderful hosts and always provide sumptuous refreshments.
Almost Mardi Gras, Sunday March 13, 3:00 PM. Gene and Sally Herritt have a lovely open home on a beautiful secluded lot. I love the floor to ceiling book cases in the living room - the top shelves are so high they've designed a special ladder to get to them! In addition to being great readers as their bookshelves suggest, they are both a lot of fun! Since this date is just a few days after Lent begins, I've taken the liberty of calling this musicale Almost Mardi Gras. Lynn Lerew's Capitol Dixieland Band (Lynn Lerew, trombone; Tim Gotwald, saxophone; Bob Steiner, clarinet; Jan Sulcove, trumpet; Bill Wilson, tuba; Sam Hepfer, drums) will perform Dixieland music (what else?) and Mitch Morrill (vocals and guitar) and Scott Matlock (vocals and violin) will provide some "street corner" New Orleans Blues. I think this one will be a blast.
CVSM Variety Hour, Saturday, April 9, 7:00 PM. Garry and Vicki Gontz will host this musicale in their new home, built in 2006. It features an open layout, cathedral ceiling and screened in porch and many whimsical and musical decorations including a collection of harmonicas. I love the "Lucky Spin" just inside the front door. Inspired by the Gontz's own artistic passions - Garry is an accomplished keyboard player and Vicki is an actress, director and playwright. - I have put together the CVSM Variety Hour - think our own Ed Sullivan Show with Dick Shoap in the host spot. There will be songs and sketches and lots of fun. Joining our cast will be singing actor Lee Merriman, singer-guitarist Tresa Paul (who used to perform with Garry in an Elvis band), and Valerie Merriman at the keyboard.
Vibrant Serenity, Sunday, May 22, 3:00 PM. As you cross the small bridge over the Falling Spring Stream into the property of Doug and Alice Wagner, there is a large rock engraved with "Serenity." There are mature willow trees, a bubbling stream and green, lush grass - that's the Serene part. The house would be the Vibrant part. It is large and open with an exposed two-story staircase, beautiful woodwork, vibrant wall colors, eclectic (and wonderful) art work, and even burlap curtains in the breakfast nook. The large covered patio sits amidst beautiful landscaping which promises to be very colorful in May. Our music will be provided by Jody (keyboard) and Nancy (vocals and drums), joined by Tim Gotwald (flute and sax). This trio will provide smooth jazz, some Caribbean influenced music complete with steel drum, and even a little Jimmy Buffett.
I am absolutely confident you will have an excellent time at each Musicale. Your purchase will support a wonderful organization, the Cumberland Valley School of Music. I hope to see you there. Fun, fun, fun!
