December 16, 2008

 Dear Friends of CVSM,

The holidays are fast approaching and we've got a lot happening here at CVSM. Last week's Christmas with Corey Musicale at MennoHaven was an outstanding way to bring in the holiday spirit.  Student recitals have been taking place for 2 weeks and staff and volunteers are busy getting all of our year-end mailings ready and out the door before the holiday break.

Our Gala Dinner Dance & Auction plans are taking shape, we've got an exciting raffle for a 2000 Jaguar underway, and the holiday Music Store discount is still going on.

Whatever holiday you and yours are celebrating this month, we wish you great joy for your festivities. We at CVSM appreciate your ongoing commitment to the Cumberland Valley School of Music - your community school of the arts.

Musically yours,

Andrew Sussman, Executive Director

Musicale Series Continues
The Cumberland Valley School of Music is again presenting a special series of musicales this year, each featuring a beautiful setting, good food, excellent company, and wonderful music.  Rooted in the European custom of Salon or Chamber concerts, the CVSM musicales feature gatherings of a small number of musicians performing together in private homes.  They promote an intimacy for both performer and listener that is not available in a larger concert hall setting.  This season, all of the musicales will be presented on Sunday afternoons.  Tickets can be purchased for $45 per person for individual musicales.

The next musicale is:

McFarland at MacFarland on Sunday, March 22 at 3:00 pm will feature singer-guitarist Tom McFarland and the CVSM Jazz Quartet at the magnificent home of Will MacFarland, 433 Clayton Ave.,Waynesboro, PA.  This stately home was originally built in 1903 to 1905 by A.O. Frick, a co-founder of Frick Company, and is one of the grandest in Waynesboro, with beautiful views from large picture windows installed by the home's second owners.  The musicale will feature the CVSM Jazz Quartet with Andrew Sussman (piano), Tim Gotwald (flute), Herm Hopple (bass), and Sam Hepfer (drums).  Special guest Tom McFarland is a well known artist, whose turtle sculptures are exhibited around the world.  He has also performed extensively as a singer-guitarist since the 1960's, and is currently art teacher at St. Maria Goretti High School.

Other Upcoming Musicales include:
Amour et Printemps (Love and Spring) on Sunday, April 19 at 3:00 pm will be held at the lovely residence of Barry and Darlene Kline, 2528 Castlegreen Drive, Greencastle. Classical guitarist Candice Mowbray and flutist Morgan Jenkins will perform.

Songs of Napoli on May 17 at 3:00 pm will be hosted by Hank and Jan Guarriello at their exquisite home at 373 Craig Road, Greencastle.  Hank Guarriello's Italian heritage gives him a great passion for Neapolitan and other Italian songs, and he posses a beautiful lyric baritone voice which will be featured at this event.  He will be joined by soprano Elisabeth Turchi, tenor Gerald Kowallis, and others.

Neighborhood Chef's Walk on June 6 will start at 4:00 pm and last until 7:00 pm along Alexander Avenue in Chambersburg.  Chefs Roger Tappen, Monica Kelso, Dave Munson, and Ron Macker have agreed to each do a Culinary booth along the street.  Musicale attendees can stroll the street and sample each of their menus.  At 6:00 pm everyone will gather in the backyard of Alexander Avenue resident and CVSM co-founder and program director Paula Hepfer's home for a concert presented by CVSM Faculty and Friends.

Tickets for musicales are $45 per person for individual musicales and includes refreshments.  Advance reservations are required.  All proceeds help support the Cumberland Valley School of Music, a non-profit member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, teaching music and drama in Chambersburg, Waynesboro, and Mercersburg, PA and Hagerstown, MD. For more information or to purchase tickets contact the Cumberland Valley School of Music at 717-261-1220 or visit their website at www.cvsmusic.org.

Don't Forget the CVSM Annual Fund Drive

Make A Gift To Your Non-profit Community Music School Today!

A majority of CVSM tuition fees are used to pay our professional teaching staff and other program expenses.  Some of our programs are offered solely for their educational and entertainment value and we must rely on the generous support of our donors to cover these costs.  This year we must raise $264,955 over and above tuition income to meet our goal of responding to community needs and interest. CVSM is well positioned to continue to teach and entertain our community for years to come but your generous support is essential for us to do so.

Your ongoing financial support helps to ensure that the Cumberland Valley School of Music continues to offer the gift of music to our community for many years to come.

Did You Know?

The pace of scientific research into music making has never been greater. New data about music's relationship to brainpower, wellness and other phenomena is changing the way we perceive mankind's oldest art form, and it's having a real-world effect on decisions about educational priorities.

Did You Know?

High school music students score higher on SATs in both verbal and math than their peers. In 2001, SAT takers with coursework/experience in music performance scored 57 points higher on the verbal portion of the test and 41 points higher on the math portion than students with no coursework/experience in the arts.

Did You Know?
College-age musicians are emotionally healthier than their non-musician counterparts. A study conducted at the University of Texas looked at 362 students who were in their first semester of college. They were given three tests, measuring performance anxiety, emotional concerns and alcohol related problems. In addition to having fewer battles with the bottle, researchers also noted that the college-aged music students seemed to have surer footing when facing tests.

The Give List: You really can contribute this holiday season!

There are lots of ways to support CVSM in addition to your generous financial support!

Here is the list of 14 ways to give to arts
 organizations this holiday season:

Volunteer your time - arts organizations need docents, people to help with administrative time, and people to help with events. Your time can be worth even more than money.

Call a friend and tell them about your favorite concert or piece of art. Word of mouth is the best way to spread the mission of an organization.

Write a letter to the editor of the opinion section of your local paper to tell them about the importance of the arts in your community.

Have a listening party in your home (can be around a broadcast of your favorite symphony or your favorite recording). The holidays are a great time to get together and share great music with friends.

Write or call your congressperson to thank them for the increase in the NEA budget for this year, and to encourage them to continue supporting the arts.

If you are a musician or an artist, teach a lesson to a child for free.

Send CDs of your favorite music to the troops overseas (ok, this one costs a little, but it is a great gift to give someone far away from home).

Someone you know probably loves the arts, but is unable to drive. Offer them a ride to his/her favorite concert or museum and see how much joy that brings!

Serve on a city level or neighborhoods arts council to help direct funds to arts organizations in need.

Call your favorite arts organization and offer to distribute brochures to a local coffee shop or bookstore.

If you are a café/restaurant/bar owner, create a signature dish or drink and name it in honor of your favorite organization.

Create a wish list of your favorite arts organizations, and ask people to make donations in your name rather than buying you presents for the holidays.

Write a blog post about a cause/charity that you are passionate about. Include a link to the cause/charity.

If your favorite arts organization has a blog, a facebook page, or some other form of social networking - leave a comment, post on their wall, or just send them an email telling them what you love about that organization.
