Dear Friends of CVSM,
There's a lot going on at CVSM over the next couple of months! There are concerts, student recitals, holiday promotions, spring classes registration, and preparations for an elegant dinner dance and auction. There are so many ways to engage with and support your local nonprofit community school of music and we hope you'll take advantage of the many offerings listed below. Most of all, I would like to take this opportunity to personally wish you and your families a Happy Thanksgiving, and to thank you for your ongoing support of the Cumberland Valley School of Music - your community school of the arts.
Musically yours,
Andrew Sussman, Executive Director
PS: Please forward this email to friends and family members that might be interested in CVSM programs and performances! Thanks!

 |

2008-2009
Festival of Musicale Series
The Cumberland Valley School of Music will present a special series of five musicales this year, each featuring a beautiful setting, good food, excellent company, and wonderful music. Rooted in the European custom of Salon or Chamber concerts, the CVSM musicales feature gatherings of a small number of musicians performing together in private homes. They promote an intimacy for both performer and listener that is not available in a larger concert hall setting. This season, all five of the musicales will be presented on Sunday afternoons. Tickets can be purchased for individual musicales, or at a discount for the entire series. #1: The first in the series is "Christmas with Corey" on Sunday, December 7 at 3:00 pm. Hosted by Menno Haven Retirement Community, the musicale will be held in the beautiful new Grand Lobby at Northgate, 1500 Northfield Drive, Chambersburg, PA. Decorated for the season, the lobby's grand yet intimate, expansive floor plan boasts a two-story stone fire place and a brand new baby grand piano which make it a perfect choice for this holiday performance.
Corey Evan Rotz is well known for his beautiful voice and entertaining personality. A Chambersburg native, Mr. Rotz is a renowned tenor with the Washington Opera were he has amassed over 350 performances of 29 principle roles during 13 consecutive seasons. He recently made his New York City debut at Carnegie Hall. He appears regularly with the world's leading artists, including world famous tenor and Washington Opera General Director Placido Domingo. During the summer of 2002, Mr. Rotz joined the Washington Opera on tour in Japan singing the role of Cassio in Otello, opposite Placido Domingo in the title role. His frequent concert appearances have taken him from the East Room of the White House to the concert halls and cathedrals of Europe, and he has garnered impressive reviews from around the world. Locally, he remains active in the arts community and has produced several concerts at the Capitol Theatre. He will be accompanied by well known area pianist and CVSM faculty member Brian Helman.
#2: McFarland at MacFarland on Sunday, March 22 at 3:00 pm will feature singer-guitarist Tom McFarland and the CVSM Jazz Quartet at the magnificent home of Will MacFarland, 433 Clayton Ave.,Waynesboro, PA. This stately home was originally built in 1903 to 1905 by A.O. Frick, a co-founder of Frick Company, and is one of the grandest in Waynesboro, with beautiful views from large picture windows installed by the home's second owners. The musicale will feature the CVSM Jazz Quartet with Andrew Sussman (piano), Tim Gotwald (flute), Herm Hopple (bass), and Sam Hepfer (drums). Special guest Tom McFarland is a well known artist, whose turtle sculptures are exhibited around the world. He has also performed extensively as a singer-guitarist since the 1960's, and is currently art teacher at St. Maria Goretti High School. #3: Amour et Printemps (Love and Spring) on Sunday, April 19 at 3:00 pm will be held at the lovely residence of Barry and Darlene Kline, 2528 Castlegreen Drive, Greencastle. A newer home, it also has beautiful views from its back windows and decks and provides a perfect setting to usher in spring. Classical guitarist Candice Mowbray and flutist Morgan Jenkins will perform from a 2nd story balcony overlooking the great room. An eclectic musician who holds degrees from the Peabody Conservatory and James Madison University, Ms. Jenkins has performed with many orchestras and bands over the years, including the "Pandean Wind Trio" and the rock/jazz quintet the "Holders". Ms. Mowbray holds degrees from Shenandoah Conservatory and Shepherd College, is the author of "Guitar Notes," a method book for group guitar instruction, and has been a featured performer at countless venues in the mid-Atlantic area.
#4: Songs of Napoli on May 17 at 3:00 pm will be hosted by Hank and Jan Guarriello at their exquisite home at 373 Craig Road, Greencastle. This is one of the most extraordinarily beautiful homes in the area, and provides a perfect setting for a musicale. Hank Guarriello's Italian heritage gives him a great passion for Neapolitan and other Italian songs, and he posses a beautiful lyric baritone voice which will be featured at this event. He will be joined by soprano Elisabeth Turchi, tenor Gerald Kowallis, and others.
#5: The final musical of the season is something completely different! Neighborhood Chef's Walk on June 6 will start at 4:00 pm and last until 7:00 pm. Alexander Avenue in Chambersburg is an attractive street with some very pretty homes built in the 1950s and 60s, but it is the unique mix of people who lives there that make it special. There are several performing musicians, local politicians, restaurateurs, several longtime patrons of the arts, and FOUR chefs! Roger Tappen, Monica Kelso, Dave Munson, and Ron Macker have agreed to each do a Culinary booth along the street. Musicale attendees can stroll the street and sample each of their menus. At 6:00 pm everyone will gather in the backyard of Alexander Avenue resident and CVSM co-founder and program director Paula Hepfer's home for a concert presented by CVSM Faculty and Friends. This promises to be a unique and exciting experience with great food and excellent music. Tickets for musicales are $45 per person for individual musicales or $190 per person for the series of five, and includes refreshments. Advance reservations are required. All proceeds help support the Cumberland Valley School of Music, a non-profit member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, teaching music and drama in Chambersburg, Waynesboro, and Mercersburg, PA and Hagerstown, MD. Support Your Non-profit Community Music School Today!
A majority of CVSM tuition fees are used to pay our professional teaching staff and other program expenses. Some of our programs are offered solely for their educational and entertainment value and we must rely on the generous support of our donors to cover these costs. This year we must raise $264,955 over and above tuition income to meet our goal of responding to community needs and interest. CVSM is well positioned to continue to teach and entertain our community for years to come but your generous support is essential for us to do so. Take a moment to reflect upon the joy you've experienced when performing or appreciating works of music. Your ongoing and increased financial support will help to ensure that the Cumberland Valley School of Music continues to offer the gift of music to our community for many years to come.
