Be A Thanksgiving Detective!

Thanksgiving is the perfect time to play detective!  You're likely to be visiting family or at least be in touch with them by phone, so after you've given thanks for your wonderful year, use the chance to scope out the missing spots in your holiday gift list and address book.

As you help prepare the Thanksgiving dinner, notice what is missing or broken or in need of repair in your sister-in-law's kitchen.  When you're putting your coat away in the closet, Cornucopianotice your father's jacket size or color so that scarf you want to get him will match.  Over apple pie, ask about your nephew's hobbies or favorite sports teams.  Carry your gift list with you, and fill in your new ideas (surreptitiously, of course).  Spend extra time with those relatives who are hardest to find things for to get inspiration.  Maybe tickets to an upcoming event will work better for them.  Check the calendar in the kitchen to see when they're available.  Or ask their partners to get further ideas.  There are a lot of clues you can gather when you're all together, and it will make shopping the day afterwards a lot easier!

If you send holiday greetings by mail, use the Thanksgiving get-togethers or phone calls to check on addresses as well.  Do you have a cousin who moved this year but you don't have the new address?  Maybe your brother does.  Or maybe you have an address update that he needs.  Make it a tradition to compare address lists after the big game when you're planning for the December holidays.

And after you've done your detective work, be sure to relax, sit back, and enjoy your friends and family.  Chances are, they're giving thanks for having such a thoughtful person as you in their lives!

"Throw Out 50 Things" by Gail Blanke reading

Are you having trouble getting started on getting rid of the clutter in your life?  We often know we should get rid of at least 50 things, but find it hard to start.  This book can make it easier!

I just read this book and found it useful as an inspiration to get rid of all the things that clutter up our homes, no longer fit, bring back bad memories, or otherwise hold us back in our lives.  The author takes us through her own home room by room, assessing what should stay and what should go, and why, and invites us to do the same.  She includes a scorecard at the end of each chapter to help us keep track and keep motivated to continue.

The first half of the book focuses on the physical "stuff" we hang on to, while the second half tackles the mental attitudes that clutter our minds.  Her mantra is "If you want to grow, you gotta let go", and the premise of the book is that by letting go of the things from the past that hold you back or make you feel bad about yourself, you can move into a happier, more productive future.

As you prepare your home for the holidays, consider getting rid of 50 things that you no longer need or use.  The book is available on Amazon.com, or at your local library (so it won't clutter your home when you're done).
Make More Time during the Holidays

Multitasking is currently considered to be an inefficient use of time.  But during the holidays, some multitasking may be the smartest way to save time and accomplish more!

Consider gift-wrapping.  Done alone, this can be tedious, but combine gift-wrapping with a few friends, a few drinks and some snacks, and it can be a fun opportunity to see your friends, get your wrapping done, and maybe share some of your gift wrap and ribbons.  How about a tree-trimming party?  You don't have to have your tree trimmed ahead of time, and it gives your guests something fun to do once they're there!

Tickets to a concert or other holiday event can be given as a gift but also provide a fun activity to share with friends and family.  Make a party of it by inviting a whole group of people to go together, and meet at your house afterwards for eggnog.  One gift idea can work for a number of people, AND you all have a great time as well!

Cooking or crafting can be multi-purposed during the holidays.  If you have a great holiday cookie recipe, make up big batches all at once and freeze the batter to let you be ready to gift to all the sweet-toothed friends on your list and have some left for any holiday parties you're invited to.  It's a lot of work at one time, but can save time when you do it all at once instead of having to come up with something separate for each event.

Whatever you do for the holidays, plan your time in advance and don't try to do too much!  Enjoy the season, and savor the moments (and those cookies)!

Please call me if you need additional help organizing your home, your office, or your schedule.  I can come to your home or office, or provide coaching by phone.
