Welcome To The Nantucket Boys and Girls Club Please enjoy these great quotes from two of our Members: "My favorite things to do at the Club is outside and in the learning center because I think they are both quiet I love them both so much. They are both my favorite things to do at Nantucket Boys and Girls Club." Member, age 9 "My favorite thing at the Club is playing outside because you can do anything outside. You can play! Family, kickball, tetherball and much more. But you can not play any action games like punching, hitting, and fighting. The Club is my favorite. As long as you're safe!" Member, age 9

Athletics:
Football and cheerleading for most participants has ended with a very successful season. I would like to thank all players, cheerleaders, coaches and volunteers for your dedication. I think this was one of the best years we have had here at the club! For the 7-8th grade team, they still have 1 game left against Nantucket's biggest rival, Martha's Vineyard. This game will be held on the Vineyard, November 20th 10:00. I would like to thank Steve Murphy, Matt Raab and Fred Tilton for another great season and for all the time they invested with our boys. Truly inspirational!
As football/cheer ends, we start basketball season with sign-ups November 8th-23rd. This gives parents plenty of time to stop by the club and sign up your child; therefore I will be firm this year with NO LATE REGISTRATION. We will also hold basketball clinics the week of November 29th-December 4th. We will be selecting teams based off the results of these clinics so it is important that your child attends these clinics. Please check at the club for specific dates and times.
FYI, the Nantucket Boys and Girls club website under the section "calendar" will be updated regularly with important dates and times so please check frequently. I also would like to thank Chuck Davis and Davis Flooring for recoating the gym floors. They are in great shape for the season.
A final note, I am still missing many uniforms from last basketball season and this football season. I will not let any child sign-up for basketball if they owe us any article of clothing. Please check closets, cars, etc, for any B&G sports items.
All the best,
Jamie Foster

If you enjoyed learning to use Adobe Photoshop to create pixel based illustrations then you are going to love working with Adobe Illustrator to make vector based art. We will be learning this software to create art work for the Digital Arts Festival Design Tech category which has the theme of repetition. After learning the basics of Illustrator, Members will be able to combine their skills in both programs to produce even more incredible results. The Following is an example from Member Maggie G of what you can do. Check it out! | | Maggie G, Untitled Repetition Design | Animation on Wednesdays continues to draw a fun crowd. All Members interested in entering the National Digital Arts Festival contest should plan their animation with a storyboard and meet with me about getting extra computer time to work on their idea. | | Recent Work from Animation and Video Game Enthusiasts |
Computer Code, a special long term project that meets on Tuesdays for all Members 11 years and older, is getting up and running. Together we have taken a look at the history of video games and participating Members have brainstormed ideas for creating their own video games. Please join us next time if you want to get involved in the mix. In other news Members have been scouring the globe in Google Earth, following the coordinate clues to finding interesting sites (or should I say sights) to earn free computer time.Brendan Lawlor Computer Lab Coordinator

Games Room News I hope everyone had a safe Halloween. We had a few awesome football games. There is a lot of team spirit around here. It is very enjoyable to see the kids having fun. The games room has been very busy as you can imagine, Pool, Bumper pool, foosball and ping pong to name a few, The kids are also playing a lot of card games, uno, slap jack, crazy 8's, 500, liars poker, and 21. Drop by and check out a few fun filled football games if you get the chance, you will love the excitement. Go Whalers!!!
We are still looking for some games and toys for The Carlos Bucks Store, have you checked you closet? Please be mindful it is getting darker sooner so keep your eyes open, the kids come out of everywhere so pay attention. That cell phone can wait...

The Arts Club
Greetings,
Well it is the holiday season again and we are preparing for our community festivities in the art room. This year the Nantucket Boys and Girls Club will be a part of the Nantucket Historical Association's wreath and tree exhibit in the museum. Our theme this year for the projects is going to be home. The gigantic stick wreath is underway and all members invited to come down and make a stick house. The tree decorating will be held at the NHA on November 30th. I am looking forward to seeing their creations and presenting them to the NHA.
Our tile making class at Nantucket Island School of design and Art was a great success. Now that the tiles are made we will be firing them and painting them within the next few months. Thank you to all the members who participated in this project.
Just a side note: because of our busy schedule with preparing for the upcoming big projects and our budget, pottery class will be on hold for the next few months.
Thank you,
Caitlin Greer Art Room Coordinator |
Teen Program
November has been building towards our next off-island trip (12/11) to Boston and the Museum of Science. Our last trip to The Edward Gorey Museum, bowling, and the Cape Cod Mall was a great success, so we're traveling a little further "in-country" to the great city of Boston, where we'll make stops in Cambridge and Faneuil Hall as well as the Science Museum. Teens and I have been going through the Boys and girls' Club "Money Matters" program to help generate awareness about budgets, savings, and planning for the future. Teens also learn about interest rates, being responsible with credit cards, and getting into the college of their choice. It's a positive program that's building slowly, but will be a great influence on the teens that complete the workshop. Daily Life at the club has included guitar lessons, ping pong and chess tournaments, as well as lots of basketball and football. The Friday teen night has been growing, and this week we will start another exciting program with the Maria Mitchell Association- Monthly trips to the Observatory! The students will get a hands-on guided workshop on how the telescope works, and how to map out the stars and planets! Who knows, maybe someone will discover a new comet!

Field Trips and More!
Well, with the preseason game that is Halloween in the books, we are fully into the Holiday season. Holidays are very important to families and we truly are one big happy family here at the club. We celebrated Halloween together and will usher in the holiday season with full gusto. I know that Caitlyn down in the art room has already begun preparations for the holiday wreath and the tree that we will decorate downtown. Every Tuesday I take a group of members to Our Island Home to interact with the residents while they enjoy their coffee hour. We bring coloring pages that the members color and then give to the occupants of Our Island Home. For the next couple of weeks we will be coloring Thanksgiving themed pages and then it will be onto Christmas and Hanukkah pages. As we do every year, Carlos and I will be having our Christmas Carol Choir. Those are always a fun time. After weeks of practice, Christmas stroll rolls around and it is the choir's time to shine! We go into town for the stroll and sing Christmas carols to all of the holiday revelers. This is always a fun time and I hope that you will encourage your child to participate. In field trip news, November 1st marked the first Kids on Ice of the school year. This is a free weekly program for all of our members who would like to go ice skating. Please fill out the special ice skating permission slips to get your child involved.

The Importance of Respect
I work at the Boys and Girls Club and I also have a child coming to the Club. The Club is and should be a Positive Place for Kids, it should be a home away from home. Hence, the kids should leave feeling productive and happy, not the opposite. But, it does happen sometimes that children do stuff that get them in trouble and they should know that there are consequencies. One of my major concern is that children need to be respectful.
First, no matter how young they are, they should respect themselves, before they can learn and appreciate respecting others. Every place has rules and even though they get broken at times, they should be kept and when they are broken children be prepared for the concequences.
We are a big family at the club and that is the way it should continue to be. The staff are here for the kids - (we are their guardians here) and we are here to protect them and keep them safe while they having fun. That is why they continue to look forward to coming to the club every day.
Thank you.

From the Learning Center
Hello Nantucket Boys and Girls Club families. As winter sets in on the island the Learning Center will be offering many new activities to keep everyone active and healthy. With that a big thank you goes out to Ted Burnaham who has offered to come in and teach yoga this November as well as Master Michael T. Miller who will coming in for a martial arts demonstration. We will also be continuing the animals care program with Stephanie at the MSPCA where members get to spend time with animals out at the shelter. We will also be continuing with our wood shop and news paper programs as well as offering a mentoring program where older members and peers can help each other with their school work. Also added has been a new board game afternoon on Wednesdays when our younger members have a half day of school. As always thank you everyone for your support and if you have any skills or hobbies you would like to share with our members please feel free to contact the Learning Center. Lastly the Learning Center will be having a book fair before the holiday break with proceeds going to support various programs at the Club, please keep your eyes open for exact dates.
Thank you,
Edward Sullivan

A Day at the Club
Even though the days are getting shorter and fall is more than half over the Club is still in full swing. Even though it has been colder, members who are dressed warm and bring their jackets have been able to go outside and play all of their usual favorites like Pickle, Touch Football, and Tetherball. Kickball has also been in high demand but it has been tough to reach base safely with Kenard out in the outfield catching every ball kicked his way. In the games room, Ping Pong has made a resurgence with many of the members playing intense, closely fought matches against the staff and other children. Remind your member to bring their Club Card and jacket!

From the Executive Director's Desk
Everything is in full swing at the Club! We are busy and pleased that so many are taking part in the programs offered. The staff has done an incredible job to provide opportunties to Nantucket's kids. I want to mention Brendan's fantastic projects in the Computer Lab and Caitlin's creativity in the Art Room as well as TJ's Dodgeball League and Joe and Sarah's popular Karaoke Club!
The holidays are just around the corner! Not only are we thinking of ways to celebrate the season; those of you that are here on the island know that means basketball season is approaching! We have more members involved in the basketball program than any other program we offer! Jamie and Chris will host clinics the week after Thanksgiving and determine the teams. While Jamie is out having knee surgery Chris will be kept extra busy! If you would like to help coach or referee please see Jamie or Chris.
Just a reminder that the weather is changing and if members want to be outside they must be properly dressed! And the days are short so please watch for children at dusk as they leave the Club!
Have a great Thanksgiving!
Phyllis McInerney, Executive Director
