Springing into Vegetable Transplants
By Matt Needham, Western Region Technical Sales Manager

PlugsAs the days get shorter and colder, it is a reminder that winter is coming quickly. As we look ahead to spring vegetable production, we need to start planning our program for clean and healthy vegetable transplants. BioWorks has safe, effective and economical products to help with your transplant growing in these upcoming months.

Many growers use RootShield® to give their transplants a healthy start in their journey to the field. RootShield Granules can be mixed into your soil mix or RootShield WP can be applied as a drench or injection. RootShield will start protecting the vegetables' roots within 24 hours after application and will protect the roots for 10-12 weeks. With a 0-hr. re-entry interval (REI) and the added benefit of RootShield continuing to grow on the roots after transplanting, RootShield is the perfect addition to your vegetable growing program.

CEASE® prevents fungal diseases like powdery mildew and Botrytis and bacterial diseases such as Pseudomonas, Xanthomonas and Erwinia. CEASE is a nice, safe alternative to copper products, leaves no unsightly residues, and has been proven safe for beneficial insects and bees. CEASE has also been very successful when used as a soil application to prevent Pythium, Rhizoctonia, Fusarium and Phytophthora.

MilStop® can be used alone or in combination with CEASE to prevent foliar fungal disease (see Tank Mixing Tech Bulletin). MilStop kills powdery mildew on contact and has a very convenient 1-hr REI. With the power to suppress fungal diseases like Botrytis, rust, downy mildew  and powdery mildew, it is a great tool to mix into your fungicide rotation.

3 Steps to Better Biocontrol

Greenhouse GrowerThis article, featured in the October 2011 edition of Greenhouse Grower Magazine, presents information on how to keep the process of incorporating biopesticides in your greenhouse a simple straight-forward process. These simple tips will greatly improve your chances for success.

Biocontrols are an intriguing alternative to traditional chemical pest control programs, but for many growers, they may seem unnecessarily expensive or confusing. Others have tried biocontrols, but abandoned them when they didn't clean up a problem as well as more familiar controls. Often, it's a misunderstanding of how biologicals work or what they are capable of doing that makes them less successful. here are three tips that can help make a biological controls program a success in your greenhouse production system.

2012 Easter Lily Production Schedule

GMProOctober's Greenhouse Management Magazine features an article by Richard J. McAvoy detailing the mid-date Easter Lily Schedule.

Easter lily height is always a critical concern. The final height is dependent on how well you control stretch during the entire forcing period.

Typically growers target a final height that falls within a narrow range. The Easter lily schedule in this article is designed to produce a lily with a final overall stem length of 16 inches. With a pot height of 6 inches this would be a plant with a final overall display height of 22 inches.
