When it Comes to Thrips:  Spray Early and Spray Often

By: Rich Reineke, Great Lakes Technical Sales Manager

ThripsIt's never too early to start looking for thrips in the greenhouse.  If they're not already there you'll probably bring them in on plants or cuttings. And once you've seen them it's off to the races to keep them under control.

Many of the products labeled for thrips control have a limit to the number of applications that can be made per crop or season to reduce the possibility of pesticide resistance. BioWorks' products have no such limits due to their unique modes of action, making them great resistance management tools to fill the spray rotation. BotaniGard®, Molt-X®, and SuffOil-X® can form the base of your program to maintain the thrips population at an acceptable level under low to moderate pest pressures. Each of these products comes with a short 4-hour REI and they are safe for workers and compatible with beneficial insect and mite programs.

Use BotaniGard and Molt-X as a tank mix (see Thrips Spray Rotation options below) to form the foundation of your thrips management program when populations are low to moderate.  Bring in the "big guns" if needed, only when pest pressures are moderate to severe. Use SuffOil-X any time - it's a great contact spray that will smother all stages of the insect's life cycle.

So, don't worry about wasting your limited thrips bullets early in the season with the conventional chemical sprays. With BioWorks'

Greenhouse GrowerBiocontrols: Tiny Tools, Big Results
Greenhouse Grower - March 2011

Michael's Greenhouses' head grower is a big believer in the potential of biological controls to help produce a great crop. And he says he has the plants to prove it.

"I am applying RootShield to everything now. There's no need for root fungicides after that. I used to do sprays in the greenhouse but now I have a water tunnel on the planting line and I run a liquid formulation of RootShield Wettable Powder over the top of the plant."  -- Roger McGaughey, Michael's Greenhouses, CT   Read more

GPN MagKeeping Young Plants Clean

GPN Magazine - February 2011

Clean cuttings, young plants or plugs has been a topic of discussion for many years in the industry. It has also been a topic of tension between customers and suppliers. This article serves to get some positive dialog going about the topic between growers, propagators, breeders and industry technical support people.

"To reduce the level and risk of pests coming in through the door, many growers have started to treat rooted and/or unrooted cuttings with products such as BotaniGard, biological fungicides such as RootShield, and nematode Steinernema."
-- Ronald Valentin, Biological Control and IPM Specialist, Biobest Biological Systems
