BioWorks Bulletin

Info to Grow                                                                     September 2010

Greetings!

As summer closes and fall begins, there is a lot going on... just as poinsettias are going to final spacing, bulbs are coming in!  Never a dull moment. Take a breather and give yourself a minute to see what's in store in this month's Bulletin.

Points_spacingTreat at Half the Rate
Just prior to spacing your poinsettia crop is an excellent time to re-apply with RootShield® WP. It is the most economical way to do this easy task and can often be done at half the initial rate. "Why" you ask? Most of the application will find its way into the crop while nearly pot tight. Secondly, at the half rate, containers are treated for just a small fraction of a penny per pot. This treatment will extend fungicide protection for an additional 12 weeks providing root protection well past the point of sale. It is often recognized that the remaining 3 months of the crop cycle can be the most problematic. Grey, cold damp days, combined with shipping stress are all factors that favor re-applying RootShield
WP.

Consider Root Assays
Prior to making this reapplication, consider having root assays done to determine the strength of the RootShield colonization. Download the Sampling Procedure Form or contact your BioWorks Technical Service Manager for help in getting this task accomplished today.

Whitefly: Treat Now or TRY to Cure Later
To keep the dreaded whitefly from getting out of control on your poinsettias, apply BotaniGard ES or 22WP now to prevent infestation. Apply at 5 to 10 day intervals.

While gathering your perennials that will be covered or moved to cold frames for the coming winter, plan on doing an application of RootShield WP before covering up. You will have a healthier, more robust and vigorous perennial next spring if you do!
BotaniGard and Biocompatibility (part 4)

This is the fourth and final segment in the series of excerpts from an article written by Kevin Cullum of Koppert Canada Limited.

Parasites
fly through the crop and lay eggs directly into the pest, which then develop inside their host until emerging as adults. Parasite adult numbers may be slightly reduced by BotaniGard® applications (Encarsia formosa, Eretmocerus eremicus, Aphidius species, Diglyphusisae, etc.).

Population reductions can be minimized by waiting until a large portion of the pest is already parasitized. Newly emerging parasites, which are protected from the BotaniGard application by the dead pest BotaniGard EScasing, should make up for any adults which may be affected. BotaniGard would likely be rated a 2 for parasites with 0 residual on the "side effects" guide. As mentioned earlier, the combination of BotaniGard, with a well established parasite population, can provide very powerful control against whitefly and aphids.

Gall midges
(Feltiella acarisuga, Aphidoletes aphidimyza) fly through the crop and lay their eggs in spots of prey. The eggs then hatch and the larvae eat the pest. We do not have enough experience yet, but potentially BotaniGard could reduce midge numbers as they are very exposed.

Time to Start Thinking about Bulbs

Bulbs are coming (or maybe you already have them?). Remember to treat them NOW to prevent Pythium, Rhizoctonia and Thielaviopsis. Applying RootShield® now is critical to basal root protection.

Drench, Dust or Dip? Your choice.
Bulbs can be drenched after planting, OR dusted or dipped in a slurry of RootShield
WP before planting. The treated bulbs are then ready for case cooling or pot cooling.

Incorporate in Media. It's all about options, so your preference might be to incorporate RootShield Granules into your soil media. If so, we recommend mixing 1.25 pounds per cu.yd.
