Common Cents for Spring Production
By Dick O'Donnell, Great Lakes Regional Technical Sales Manager

Whew! The poinsettias are now out of the house and out of mind. We hope that all experienced a Happy Holiday Season and wish everyone a healthy and prosperous New Year.

Impatiens_GreenhouseNow however, is the time we all begin to roll up our sleeves and start into the spring production cycle. One way to assure your success this spring will be to provide preventative protection against root rot diseases such as Pythium, Rhizoctonia & Thielaviopsis. RootShield® Granules incorporated into the media or RootShield® WP drenched into the pots will provide protection for 10-12 weeks. This reduces cost inputs of additional chemical treatments, as well as the time and labor needed to accomplish the tasks.

Foliar diseases can also be bothersome on spring crops. Tank mixing CEASE® and MilStop® will not only provide protection from foliar disease infection but will also eradicate pre-existing powdery mildew. This tank mix has a 4-hour REI, allowing for less down time within the treated greenhouse area. (Click here for tank mix details.)

Fungus gnats are yet another pest (will it ever end?!) that can be quite a problem for your plants as well as a nuisance to your workers. NemaShield™ is a safe and cost effective solution. Drenching the media with these beneficial nematodes can reduce or eliminate the activity of the fungus gnat larvae, allowing for the healthy development of the root system.

Follow a common cents approach to managing your disease pressures this spring through the use of RootShield, CEASE, MilStop and NemaShield!

Successful Poinsettia Crop with NO Chemical Fungicides!
Michael's Greenhouse's Roger McGaughey claims 2009 was their most successful poinsettia year.

Here are some things they did:
  • Used RootShield WP to prevent root disease
  • No chemical fungicide inputs
  • In mid-Nov. a second half rate (2 oz./100 gal.) application of RootShield made
  • Nematodes used to control thrips and fungus gnats
  • Mid season McGaughey was able to reduce fertilizer to 100ppm due to the great root system allowing maximum nutrient uptake
"We made it all the way to the end without a chemical fungicide" touts McGaughey.  "We're proud of our white biological roots!"
