| Resistance:
Why does it happen and how to manage it |
|
By Randy Martin, Ph.D., Dir. of Product Development
The development of pesticide resistance by pest populations can have significant consequences - none of which are desirable. As resistance develops in the population, a product must be used at increasingly higher rates and more frequently in order to achieve effective control. Eventually that product becomes ineffective and provides little or no pest control. Resistance is a genetically-based phenomenon that occurs when pest populations are repeatedly exposed to the same pesticide active ingredient. Depending on the pesticide's mode of action and how often it is applied, resistance can develop rapidly, or over a long period of time. All pests have the potential to develop resistant populations - insects, mites, fungi, bacteria, weeds, nematodes - even rodents. Insects and mites have the highest likelihood of developing resistance to pesticides - in excess of 400 species have developed resistance to insecticides and acaricides. Read More |
| Oh Yes, Poinsettia Season is Here! |
|
By Dr. Chris Hayes, SE Technical Sales Manager
As the spring warms up the northern half of the US, and brings record heat to us in Tampa and south Florida, once again the Poinsettia Season is upon us.
Many growers around the country have used RootShield for prolonged root disease control. A large percentage of these growers have been working with BioWorks since last century when RootShield® Biological Fungicide was introduced. Early adopters added RootShield® Granules to their media; current growers now have the advantage of using our new, water-soluble wettable powder, RootShield® WP. Both formulations supply the roots with an overwhelming amount of the beneficial fungus found in RootShield. Both safely protect the roots for 10 to 12 weeks without harm to the plant, the grower or the environment. RootShield does this by covering up the roots and "shielding them" from many root rots; ultimately "eating" the root rots before they harm your roots.
Rounding Out Your Poinsettia Program
In the last few years BioWorks has been honored to offer growers additional biological & biorational products that safely and effectively "eat, dry or suffocate" insects and foliar diseases affecting poinsettia crops. Growers now have the option of using a beneficial fungus (BotaniGard® ES & BotaniGard® 22WP) that "eats" insects, especially whiteflies that attack poinsettias; CEASE® a beneficial bacteria that "attacks" leaf spots caused by foliar bacteria and fungi; and beneficial nematodes that "eat" fungus gnat larvae attempting to attack the young roots of poinsettia liners. In addition, BioWorks has some biorationals that "dry" & "choke" insects and foliar diseases. MilStop® is a bicarbonate-based food grade formulation that dries up foliar diseases like Botrytis and the mildew brothers, Powdery & Downy. SuffOil-X™ is our newest product that suffocates insects, mites, and foliar diseases on contact. All products are safe, and most are "green" and/or listed for organic use. Thanks to our loyal growers, BioWorks continues to update our product line, providing Responsible, Economical & Proven alternatives to synthetic chemicals. | |
