Legacy Lodge Notes from Dallas Trip January 28-29, 2009
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We had a unique opportunity to meet many dynamic and faith-filled people last month.  At the tribute for Bob Buford, one gentleman played a song for us called "Oliviatown". He sung about a little girl who loved to draw with sidewalk chalk and spent hours creating her town of people and homes.  The songwriter spoke of how amazing it was to see Olivia, who at age 4 sees her world according to how important the people in her life are.
She drew BIG people and little homes and how he learned from Olivia the reminder of how God is more interested in His people than what kind of house we live in or car we drive.
SHINE meeting action points from white board:
·        You have to get the camp first there are a lot of camps for sale
·        Must have clarity from the Lord
o       What is our distinctive?
o       The distinctive comes from "our story"
·        May need a tag line with Legacy Lodge-Life Launch?
·        Talk with Joe Dumars.  Is there a tie?
·        Must define your audiences.
o       Who will you target and how will you target them?
o       Mom is the one who usually decides on camp the first time attending
·        Connect with Mary Helen Franco from ACA
·        What are the intermediate steps that could be taken to transition from where you
            are now to where you want to go?  Seek the Lord on this.
·        Connect with Bruce Johnston at JH Ranch
·        Do camp investigations
Other points and issues operational side:
·        We have to fill the beds
·        Retention is a challenge
·        YMCA concept of tapping into corporations who have housing in Colorado
·        It will take a lot longer and it will be a lot more expensive to move toward vision
Points and ideas:
·        Desire to see sports and recreation combined
·        Sports marketing
·        Property management
·        Christian business men's retreats
·        Why do camps fail?  Volume issue
·        Must examine this as we go
·        What is our distinctive?  Ideas:
o       Entrepreneurship for kids-life skills
o       Conversations with adults
§         Jer 29:11 Getting in touch with God's plans
§         Will our youth know their purpose?
o       Character and Leadership
§         Joes for Life website
§         Youth are searching for purpose
§         12-18 years old very strategic stage
§         Leadership is very needed
o       Need ongoing relationship piece that what was started at camp must be continued
Other thoughts:
Develop leaders that are realizing their potential and character.  Identify giftedness and abilities and achievement for child/adult through projects, helping with chores/tasks while instilling the character traits God wants in each of us.  We don't develop followers, we develop leaders. Focus on your story and put into place what God desires.  Many parents want our children to find their purpose.  What is our distinctive?  Identify their God-given gifts and focus on what purpose God has for them.  Experience how to work, walk set apart, work with excellence and be relational.
Boldly ask God for what we need!
Seek professionals in how we can teach leaving a legacy in leadership development.
Proverbs 22:6  Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not turn from it.
A farmer is offering his land in South Carolina to teach inner-city kids how to plant, care for and harvest crops, as well as caring for goats, chickens, and livestock.  As part of the donations received, 33% of the produce, dairy and meat go back to the original donor.  This gives the donor satisfaction and 66% of the donation is dedicated to helping kids learn basic farming skills. Another idea for Legacy Lodge or some facet of use of land?
