There are moments in our life when the passage of time really slaps us in the face. This past month was one of those times for me. A few weeks ago, I was on a college campus in Arizona moving my oldest daughter into her college dorm. It seems impossible that she could be old enough to be leaving home. It also brought up a few thoughts on my own age or, shall we say, "season of life".
For one thing, I had lived in the area myself some twenty plus years ago and had rarely visited since. I really felt the passage of time, in my now 40+ body, visiting places I hadn't been to since my twenties. Also, walking around campus where youth is just bursting at the seams can start to make you feel a little old. I have to say the vitality and excitement of watching these young people start a new phase of life was fun but, in all honesty, I can't say I would want to go back. It made me think about what "enhancing the seasons of your life" really means to me.
My current age is great in so many ways, which is actually something I have felt about each stage in my life. That doesn't mean, however, that I don't want to look and feel as good as possible. That is why I try to eat right, exercise, and do what I can to take care of the body and face I have been given. It doesn't have to be an obsession like we sometimes see with people in the media, or take up a great deal of time or even money. Just making the effort to make sure my outside feels as good about getting older as my inside goes a long way towards helping me enjoy where I am. I wouldn't trade this age for any age of my past, and I hope I will continue to feel this way as time passes.

Making Our Community Beautiful
Our receptionist Tami chose this month's charity. She wanted to make sure that her choice helped with the youth in our community. September is National School Success Month, so it seemed a perfect month to offer our support to Missouri Valley Big Brothers Big Sisters. They are a nationally accredited, not-for-profit organization providing services to youth in Cole County for over twenty years. They facilitate the matching of adult mentors, otherwise known as Bigs, with Littles, children 6 to 17 who need adult support, guidance and encouragement.
They presently serve over 250 children a year and have made over 120 matches, with many more kids on the waiting list. Money donated goes towards mentoring and providing background checks to make sure the matches are successful and positive influences on the children's lives.

A Moment on Makeup

Camouflaging Hyperpigmentation
As we go into the fall and winter months, and our tans fade, the damaging effects of the summer sun may show in the form of darker patches on our skin known as hyperpigmentation. Although there are a number of skin care products and treatments that we can use to eliminate those brown spots, we sometimes need a quick fix to camouflage them.
When using makeup to camouflage, you need to balance the color you are trying to hide by using an opposite tone on the color wheel. This works great in balancing red tones in the skin by using a yellow shade to neutralize the discoloration. Brown pigment is one of the most difficult to hide because there is no opposite color. For lighter skin tones the appropriate color is usually a neutral beige, and for darker skin tones a beige with hints of orange seems to work best. It really is a matter of trial and error to find the perfect shade.
For most tones, you begin by matching the healthy tone of the skin, which will be lighter than the pigment. This helps to create an even "canvas" that can be up to two shades lighter than the natural skin tone. Once the hyperpigmentation is camouflaged you can then match your appropriate skin tone with a darker shade mineral foundation or even a bronzer.
