Barb's Blurb
Every summer I focus one newsletter on sun protection. I know we hear it everywhere, but I can't stress enough the importance of this one step in your skin care regimen. This summer, I am writing this newsletter while also giving it the ultimate test: I am at the beach. I remember past beach vacations and my attempt to come home with the deepest tan possible. How would my vacation turn out with good sun protection factored in? Well, first off, I came armed with my bag loaded with sunscreens and Colorescience makeup to keep my family protected. I tossed in a couple of hats and was ready to go.
Upon arriving, I made sure we applied our sunscreen before we went out and reapplied every few hours. This can be rather time-consuming with four children. If I was in an area where I could choose shade I often did, but hey, it's the beach. I spent a full day out in the sun on a boat and snorkeling, was out in the water with the kids whenever we were free to do so, and all in all enjoyed a great beach vacation. I can't say I felt deprived at all.
How was it different?
I enjoyed our sightseeing and excursions so much more, I didn't feel it was limiting my tan like I sometimes had in the past.
I sweat a lot less. The beach is even more amazingly beautiful when you enjoy it under an umbrella with a soft breeze. No long sessions sweating to death in search of even color!
I never had to take painful stinging showers and I slept great. The sheets didn't feel like sand paper rubbing over my burnt skin.
I must say it was pretty liberating. In spite of my sun protection routine I did get a little color, but didn't burn once and had a great time. I didn't feel deprived in the least. As a matter of fact, I wish I could test it out again next week!
If you are heading out for a sunny vacation or just spending time at the pool this summer, here are some tips for choosing your sunscreen compliments of www.sossaveourskin.com. To save your skin you need more than high SPF. - Choose products that offer true broad spectrum protection against UVA and UVB.
- Choose a photostable sunscreen which keeps working when exposed to light (believe it or not, some sunscreens degrade in the sun).
- Pick a sunscreen that minimizes irritation and works on sensitive skin.
- Pick a sunscreen that YOU will use everyday. That means one that is wearable, with a breathable texture and comfortable feel.
So liberate yourself from the search for the perfect tan and enjoy healthy skin this summer. You may find you like it.

Making Our Community Beautiful
Before you know it, the United Way will be up and running with their 2010 campaign. We are getting a head start on our donation this year and choosing July as United Way month. This month, a portion of our profits will benefit this campaign. As a United Way board member and a participant in their fund allocation panels, I know firsthand how United Way works with organizations to make sure that money is being used as promised and kept in our community. Each year this gives us citizens the opportunity to support these fiscally responsible charities and the people that work so hard to make them a success. Fundraising can be a real drain on an organization, and United Way reduces that burden every year with their community campaign.
So watch for news on this year's campaign. Support the many local business and civic organization fundraisers and, if you can, support it through your own donation. Jefferson City is a very generous community, one of the many reasons I am proud to call it home. If you would like more information on the organizations the Central Missouri United Way supports or how you can get involved, go to www.unitedwaycemo.org.

Product of the Month

Increased UV exposure as well as humidity and perspiration can wreak havoc on the skin. Vitamin C and Vitamin E are making headlines as great additions to your sunscreen routine. SkinMedica's Vitamin C+E Complex provides a highly stable, concentrated product that works synergistically with your sunscreen to fight free radicals released in the skin through UV exposure. It also increases collagen production, promotes cell renewal, and acts as an anti-inflammatory. It does all this in a silky, fragrance-free formulation that feels great on your skin.
Recent studies investigating the absorption of topical vitamin C have found a number of factors that are required for effective delivery. These factors include:
- The formulation must contain L-ascorbic acid
- It must be available in high concentrations (10-20%)
- Must be at a pH of < 4.2
- L-ascorbic acid must be stabilized in formulation
SkinMedica's Vitamin C+E meets this criterion. This is just one more reason our clinic chooses to recommend SkinMedica products. They are excellent preventative and reparative products on their own and, when paired with our clinical services, give superior cosmetic results.
This month you can add a SkinMedica Vitamin C+E Complex to your sunscreen and offer your skin its best defense against photoaging.

A Moment on Makeup
Summer hits and a heavy makeup application is the last thing I feel like bothering with. That is why I am excited about the two pairings Colorescience has put together for this month. They are both great options for summer skin. First, we have the Pretty Protection duo, which is a Wild to Mild Primer and Sunforgettable SPF 30 Mineral Powder. This combination is your everyday sun protection, but it is also your summer color, too. Apply the SPF 20 primer and get a sheer sun-kissed look that both protects and soothes as it evens out skin tone. Then dust on your mineral powder. I add a touch of blush (Just Barely for me) to this combo and my spritzer and I am ready to go for the day. It is quick, easy, looks great and feels like you have nothing on. If the primer is a bit too heavy or you don't need as much coverage, you can go with the second pairing this month which is the Sheer Crème Foundation and Pressed Mineral Foundation Compact. This is a customizable kit with many color choices. If you are a tinted moisturizer girl this is the pair for you. It is very lightweight and gives a great color finish. Add the compact to dust on or camouflage problem areas. You can use it as an all-over color addition or just to cover problem areas. You can get a complimentary application of our summer makeup offerings after any treatment this month. So stop by and try it out. I think you will be amazed at how light-feeling great coverage can be, with the added benefit of sun protection. What more could a girl in summer ask for?

Dermaplaning: Not Just for Hair Removal
Dermaplaning is an exfoliating treatment that provides an alternative to chemical peels or microdermabrasion and is a good choice for anyone looking for softer, brighter skin. The dermaplaning treatment is done by an experienced medical aesthetician who uses a blade to gently exfoliate the outer layer of dead skin cells and remove fine facial hair commonly known as "peach fuzz". Skin care products will penetrate better after removing the dull, keratinized skin cells, leaving the skin more illuminated in appearance and softer to the touch. Results are visible after one treatment.
Dermaplaning done immediately before a chemical peel is an excellent way to make sure that the peel penetrates deeper and more evenly.
A secondary benefit received from dermaplaning is the removal of the fine "peach fuzz" that most of us have on our face. It's called vellous hair and is the fine translucent hair that you can see if you look closely on women's faces. Vellous hair is different from the other types of hair on our head and body; it returns softly and will not become coarser or darker because of the treatment.
Almost every skin type can benefit from dermaplaning. The only skin type that is contraindicated for the procedure is acneic skin with active acne lesions. The oil from the sebaceous glands needs to travel up and connect with the vellous hair in order for it to be excreted. If the hair is removed and the oil builds up, the glands are obstructed and cause more breakouts.
The treatments can be done up to once a month to give skin recovery and healing time. It is a great option for your exfoliation treatment in the summer months, although sunscreen is always a must!
