Come celebrate National Chemistry Week at one or all of the exciting events brought to you by the Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society. This year, 2011, is special because it is the International Year of Chemistry as

signated by the United Nations and the International Union on Pure and Applied Chemistry.

Special Lecture & Science is Fun Chemistry Demos at
Museum of Science Boston National Chemistry Week Kick-off Event:

Sunday October 23, 2011 1pm AND 4pm

Phyllis A. Brauner Memorial Lecture by Dr. Bassam Shakhashiri, President Elect of the American Chemical Society.

Dr. Bassam Shakhashiri is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is the William T. Evjue Distinguished Chair for the Wisconsin Idea.  Professor Shakhashiri has captivated audiences with his scientific demonstrations at a variety of locations including Boston's Museum of Science, the National Academy of Sciences and the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington. 

Taking place in Cahners Theatre (2nd floor, Blue Wing) at 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm.   Museum of Science Boston.

Boston Children's Museum:
Saturday October 29, 2011-National Chemistry Week volunteers will be stationed throughout the museum to perform hands-on science activities related to the National Chemistry Week theme: Chemistry, our life our health with museum patrons. 11am-4pm. Activities include: making hand-sanitizer from scratch (pictured on the right), making UVB bead bracelets that indicate when it is time to put on sunscreen and testing common foods for: sugar, Vitamin C, Iron and starch.  
Museum admission is required to participate.   
 
The American Chemical Society (ACS) with over 163,000 members, is the largest scientific society in the world. ACS is a non-profit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress and a global leader in providing access to chemistry-related research. It's main offices are in Washington, D.C. and Columbus, OH.

The Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society, with over 7000 members, sponsors a number of awards, travel grants and scholarships to honor professional chemists. NESACS holds ten meetings per year, open to the public, around the Boston area.
