Greetings!

In this December News Edition our focus is continuous monitoring. PID Analyzers designs and manufactures complete systems (including probes) for ambient air, stack gases, water pollution and process control. Our analyzers range from PID or FID based for measuring VOC's in air or water, carbon bed breakthrough, output of thermal oxidizers..., TCD based for measuring hydrogen, electrochemical, ZrO2, paramagnetic based for measuring oxygen, NDIR based for CO2, VOC's, CO, N2O, NH3, Process Gas Chromatographs with PID, FID, FPD, TCD, COD, FUV detectors for ppb to % levels of multiple components. Our water pollution analyzers use our unique ion selective electrode technology for measuring NH3, CN-, Cl2, ...What sets us apart from our competition? Our HNU detectors and that we can provide analog or digital outputs including voltage, 4-20 mA, RS232, MODBUS outputs for many of our continuous analyzers.Call us 800-724-5600 X238 or email us [email protected] today for an updated quote on your next monitoring project.
WHY A CONTINOUS MONITOR IN A PLANT?

If a company wishes to increase or expand
their process, it will have to offset the
increases so that the total number of hazardous
air pollutant emissions does not increase. In
fact, many agencies will use this
opportunity to require reduction of other
emissions in the plant. This would involve
the installation of pollution controls to
reduce pollutants to the required level.
Continuous monitoring of VOC's plays a
critical role in this process by providing
accurate information on the output as well
as optimization and monitoring of the
control equipment efficiency.

Sensors can be used for safety or
environmental monitoring at low ppm levels.
Oxygen can be measured at % levels or ppm
levels depending on the application. A special
oxygen sensor is available for measuring
oxygen in stack gases where the acid gases
can interfere with operation. For a number of
combustion gases such as: SO2, NO, NO2,
hundreds to thousands of ppm can be
measured instead of low ppm. These
electrochemical sensors have filters to
minimize interferences. The CG and TCD
measure low % levels to 100% respectively

ON-LINE OR AT-PROCESS QUALITY MEASUREMENT OF VOC'S

Over the past decade, there has been a major shift in the quality control function from the laboratory to "near or at" the process as the need for more rapid & sensitive analyses becomes the norm.

Analytical tools are needed that are precise, easy to use, fast responding, and dependable (99% uptime). Tools such as Raman Spectroscopy and Electrochemistry have been used successfully for quality control of plastics and biopharmaceuticals respectively.

The use of hydrocarbon based solvents to remove components from foods has been replaced by a new solvent namely liquid carbon dioxide. This has eliminated the need for many VOC measurements. Many foods, however, have additives, termed "honey flavored"... Other processes such as coffee roasting can use an on line VOC analyzer to monitor or "protect" the coffee aroma, A VOC analyzer can be used to measure the VOC content and provide a quality control technique for a variety of foods. In the semiconductor industry trace particulate, ,trace oxygen & moisture or trace VOC's can ruin batches of semiconductors. Many companies are investigating ppb VOC analyzers for these measurements. There will be more monitoring in this area and much of it will be on-line. Other measurements involve the detection of ethylene in fruit ripening, Here, the storage area can be blanketed with nitrogen or air to reduce the ethylene in the room. The polymerization process can be monitored to minimize the residual monomer in the process.

Over the past few years, stable instruments for the measurement of total VOC's at low ppm and ppb levels have become available. PID Analyzers has developed instrumentation that can be used to measure and control VOC's at ppb levels. This is the Model 112-PPB and is used for on-line automatic measurements of VOC's. Another Model is used for ppm or ppb measurements at the process. The former instrument does not require an operator but the latter instrument is semiautomatic but simple to operate.
