First Mountain

        on Canyon Lake

"After spending time at First Mountain, we both agreed that this is where God led us to begin our life together under one roof."

Nancy Kincaid and Robert Duckworth

After living in Houston for the past thirty years, each with their own home, Nancy Kincaid and Robert Duckworth were ready for a change. Last summer they set out to find that place that "was away from the fast pace of Houston" and where they could begin their life together. Having always liked the area between Brenham, San Antonio, Fredericksburg and Austin, Nancy and Robert began their search. After doing some research on the Internet, they decided to visit Canyon Lake.

Nancy, who is from Wichita, Kansas, and Robert, from Golden, Colorado, were both attracted to the Texas Hill Country in the Canyon Lake area. The beauty of the lake and hills and the close drive to San Antonio, Austin and Houston were important factors when choosing Canyon Lake, Texas to build their retirement home. When they first visited First Mountain Robert recalls,

"Paul Sullivan at Las Brisas loaded us up in his truck and showed us First Mountain. Nancy and I both really liked the location and felt that it offered exactly what we were looking for. We went back later that night on our own and the feeling of calling this home became an easy agreement between us. Nancy and I wanted a community that had scenic views in all directions to build our home, and First Mountain was the first place I had come across in Texas where the landscape reminded me of growing up in Colorado.

After spending time at First Mountain, we both agreed that this is where God led us to begin our life together under one roof. The view out our front door would be the beauty of Canyon Lake; out the back door we would see the peacefulness of the Hill Country. We also felt that when our children and grandchildren came to visit they would also enjoy all the recreation and beauty Canyon Lake and First Mountain offered. "

There is no doubt that their children who live in Austin, California, Florida, Denton and Houston, will find their home at First Mountain a magnet for family vacations and memorable get-togethers for years to come.

Welcome Nancy and Robert to First Mountain!

Great Links to Follow for Bluebonnet Sightings

Bluebonnets and some rd

Come spring in Texas, so come the wildflowers.  In the past that certainly has been the case, but in the spring of 2011 wildflowers were tough to find even in the Texas Hill Country. The devastating drought throughout the state especially during the fall and winter of 2010 prevented the seeds from germinating which kept the wildflowers from blooming.

What is the forecast for spring of 2012?  Good news. In an Associated Press article, the senior botanist at The University of Texas at Austin's Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Damon Waitt states:

"I know Texas has been in the news because of its drought but I think this spring we're going to be in the news for a good wildflower season.   It's looking good out in the field. Bluebonnets the size of saucers are hugging the ground right now, getting ready to bolt and send up their flowers."

Due to the beneficial autumn rains received in the northern, eastern, and central parts of the state, much of the state is expecting a blanket of bluebonnets, but unfortunately for the Panhandle, West Texas and South Texas, the wildflower crop may not be as good.

Before those of us who live in the Texas Hill Country jump for joy, be forewarned.  According to a recent entry in the TexasWildflowersPictures.com

Recent rains have spurred a great deal of growth in grasses and non-native weeds such as the invasive giant mustard (Rapistrum rugosum). This could prove very detrimental to native wildflowers that must compete with them. Although conditions have been good for a decent display of wildflowers this year, there may be many areas that will not be as showy because of this.

Regardless, those of us who live in Canyon Lake and elsewhere in the Texas Hill Country we'll keep our fingers crossed for a great crop of wildflowers.  So hurry to the Hill Country for the best viewing!  Click here, for great bluebonnet sighing links.
