Authentic Tex-Mex near Canyon Lake

You can't be Texan without sometimes having a hankerin' for some Tex-Mex. If you're living in Canyon Lake, one of the best places to find authentic Tex-Mex is Las Barcas Tex-Mex Grill.

Las Barcas has everything you could want from a Mexican restaurant and more, from fajitas to seafood to hamburgers---and let's not forget the Margaritas.  They even serve breakfast daily, which includes American staples like bacon and pancakes, but with a Tex-Mex flare.

On top of all that, the restaurant is only 3 minutes from Las Brisas and 15 minutes from First Mountain.

Canyon Lake Activities

              Spotlight: Natural Bridge Caverns

Natural Bridge Cavern Logo

Need a break from boating on the lake?  Want to have a fun, cool, place to take your family or friends this summer?  Why not consider touring the Natural Bridge Cavern. It's a great family activity for all ages.

It is the most extensive cavern within the San Antonio area and one of the largest caverns within the state of Texas.

Visitors to the caverns walk through different layers of limestone, a sedimentary rock which were formed millions of years ago. Created by tectonic stresses, faults and cracks formed in the rock. Over time the underground water moving along the cracks eventually carved the passages at Natural Bridge Caverns.

Judy and JR Bibb

First Mountain on Canyon Lake

"It's a Whole Different Life

in Canyon Lake"                                          ----Judy and J.R. Bibb

Last Labor Day Weekend, not even a year ago, J.R. and Judy Bibb, headed to Canyon Lake for the first time from the Houston area. Originally from Oklahoma, they had spent many a happy time on Lake Tenkiller, a Corps of Engineers lake near Tahlequah, OK.   Looking to find that same kind of lake, deep, clear, blue water with an unadulterated shoreline, near their Sugar Land home of 22 years, they realized that it did not exist.

Why First Mountain on Canyon Lake?

A relative suggested Canyon Lake in the Hill Country and last September they decided to drive west to take a look.  What they found, they loved!  Clear blue, pristine water with a beautiful shoreline.  On that same trip they were also considering property for a future vacation/retirement home, with no intention to buy, but found First Mountain.  Judy states that they "immediately fell in love with First Mountain."  J.R. was impressed by the quality and feel of the development and, of course, "the stunning views of the lake and surrounding hill country." Judy and J.R. became First Mountain owners in October of 2010.

Erin and Joss GibbIn early June of this year, they spent a week in Canyon Lake with a houseful of family guests including their son, Josh, daughter-in-law, Erin and two grandchildren, Avery and Amelia.  They were the first family to "baptize" the pool, and frequented it daily enjoying the water and the view.  "It's a great pool for our grandchildren, especially with the beach entry."

Judy and J.R. hope to build a home at First Mountain in the next two to five years.  For Judy, it can't be soon enough. When reaching Sealy, TX on their drive home, she mentioned to J.R. "I'm ready to turn around and head back to Canyon Lake. It's so peaceful, relaxing, and tranquil there."

A Fisherman's Dream--- Canyon Lake, Texas

Like fishing? Whether you are a beginner or an expert, summertime is a great time to try your hand at fishing. If living at Las Brisas or First Mountain on Canyon Lake, you have quick and easy access to one of the best fishing lakes in Texas. But before you head out on your boat, it's a good idea to know what you're likely to find when you cast your line into Canyon Lake.

Six Types of Fish in Canyon Lake

There are predominantly six kinds of fish in Canyon Lake.  They are the Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth bass, Guadalupe bass, White bass, Striped bass and Catfish.

Canyon Lake:  Tips and Tactics

During the summer months the waters of Canyon Lake are clear, and the water temperature is around 75 degrees. The lake gets as deep as 125 ft. These conditions are good for white and striped bass. According to Texas Wildlife Department, you are likely to find schooling activity of white and striped bass around main-lake points and humps. These fish can be caught using topwater baits, jigging spoons, grubs, and rattletraps.  For more tipsclick here.

Note that during the spring, fall, and winter months, the most popular and most abundant sportfish in Canyon Lake is the Largemouth bass.

"Well Kept Secret:  Canyon Lake---Jewel of the Hill Country"

According to Jim Files of JR's Guide Service, the timing could not be better to fish in Canyon Lake. A massive flood in 2002 resulted in the most populous and well-fed fish in recent memory. Files writes, "more Largemouth in the 2 to 8 pound range are coming to the boat for our clients now, compared to, say, he past 5 years or so.  Click here  to read Jim's full article.
