Spotlight: The Heritage Museum of the Texas Hill Country

Canyon Lake Heritage MuseumThe HeritageMuseum of the Texas Hill Country is located at Canyon Lake, Texas.  The Museum is dedicated to encouraging and fostering awareness of the natural and cultural history of Comal County and the Texas Hill Country through collection, preservation and interpretation of its rich history.

Known for its prolific number of dinosaur tracks which were formed roughly 100 million years ago during the deposition of the upper part of the Glen Rose Formation, the museum conducts daily tours to see the tracks.

Within the museum there are displays of Native American and early pioneer artifacts, the Canyon Dam history, fossils, an open air picnic area, and the Heritage Garden Trail of native Texas plants.

First Mountain on Canyon Lake
       "Part of God's Country"
                                                 Allen Broyles

Allen Broyles and his wife, Jan, have long had a love affair with Central Texas.  Before they were married in the 1980's, they decided to buy a homesite in Canyon Lake because they knew they wanted to retire in the Texas Hill Country, a.k.a., "God's Country".

As their lives changed and the area of their first homesite became overgrown with telephone poles and wires, they began to consider other communities on Canyon Lake.  After looking for years, they finally found the homesite of their dreams at First Mountain.  They purchased the homesite and now have broken ground (they are the first!) on a tri-level home that will afford them the unobstructed 180 degree panoramic view of Canyon Lake they have longed to have.

Broyles House
  Broyles Home Under Construction
Loving to sail, bike and motorcycle ride, Allen is looking forward to his retirement days in Canyon Lake.  Canyon Lake's proximity to San Antonio, Austin, New Braunfels, San Marcos, Boerne, Wimberley and other localities was key to deciding on living at First Mountain.  Allen said "We are out in the boonies where we can enjoy the beautiful Texas Hill Country and the gorgeous blue waters of Canyon Lake, yet so close to a number of large cities and unique Central Texas towns when we need them. It's the best of all worlds."

Allen and Jan are looking forward to having their friends from all over the country visit them in Canyon Lake. Friends be forewarned. Call ahead.  They may be booked!

Besides the beautiful home the Broyles have begun to build, the resort pool is starting to take shape and the maibox station is built. The lake views from First Mountain are spectacular bathed in the winter sun! It is a beautiful time to visit.  Don't delay, come see us.

Sgt. De Leon and his Family Receive Keys to their Home Friday, December 3!
                        Las Brisas, Canyon Lake, TX

On Friday morning, December 3, Ret. Sgt. Jorge De Leon and his family received a mortgage free home courtesy of Operation FINALLY HOME, Tilson Homes and the Texas Sentinels Foundation.

On a beautiful warm and blustery Friday morning over 100 well wishers gathered at Las Brisas to celebrate with the De Leon family the gift of a mortgage free home, free schooling, and a new mowing tractor.  The happiness of the De Leon family was infectious.  His wife elegantly recounted the ups and downs their family has faced since the day she received the fateful phone call alerting her to her husband's life threatening injury.

Jim, dan and de leon familyDan Wallrath, founder of Operation Finally Home and recipient of the top ten CNN Hero award, graciously thanked all who made the day possible. Richard Filip, president and co-founder of the Texas Sentinels Foundation, Eddie Martin, president of Tilson Homes and  a large number of contractors, subcontractors and suppliers donated the materials and the funds to make the home a reality.

Jorge De Leon joined the U.S. Army in 2001 after eight years on the police force in Puerto Rico. On his fourth deployment to Afghanistan in April 2004, Jorge and his unit were on their way back to camp after a patrol through the Gashni region. Jorge was driving a Humvee, the lead vehicle of the convoy when it ran over . . .  click here to read more.

New Braunfels newest live music venue, The Phoenix Saloon rose again as an historic Texas bar, chili parlor and live music venue in March of this year. The Phoenix  was  originally established in 1871 and the first bar in Texas to  serve women. It had a beer garden with a bell in a tree for service (as it would besmirch a lady's reputation to enter the bar).
