The Galveston County SBDC is pleased to announce our new and improved website.  Check it out at www.gcsbdc.com (link) The new website will enable you to view our classes on-line and to register and pay for classes on-line.  You must first become a STAR member.  This is very simple and easy to do and there is no cost to become a STAR member.  STAR members receive a discount for registering and paying for their courses on-line.  You can also access archived copies of our newsletters and free articles with valuable information for the business owner.  Become a STAR member today!

 

Holiday schedule:

The GCSBDC will maintain normal operations throughout the holidays, closing on Friday, December 24th and Friday, December 31.  We will resume normal classes in January.

 

Profit Mastery:

The GCSBDC will be offering the nationally recognized "Profit Mastery" course in financial management beginning in Q1 2011.  This class is focused on the business owner or manager.  It teaches the business owner how to translate the language that accountants use into the language and concepts that a business owner uses.  This enables the business owner to better communicate with his or her accountant or banker.  But beyond this, the course teaches the business owner how to use financial information to make better management decisions.    This class has been taught to thousands of business owners throughout the world.  It is intense, and NOT BORING!  For more details, visit our website www.gcsbdc.com 

 
Leon's Kaplan Business

Speedy's Printing has been in business in Galveston for over 47 years.  It is a family owned business started by the current owners' father, Isaac (Speedy) & Sophie Kaplan.  One of the current owners, Leon Kaplan, has been working with Consultant Carroll Cobb for several months in an effort to reposition the business following Hurricane Ike.  Like many other businesses on the island, Speedy's suffered a total loss of its street level offices, although there was minimal damage to the equipment and offices located on the second level.  Also, the business suffered from very significant losses in revenues, because many of its customers either closed or spent many months struggling to get their businesses reopened after Ike.

Mr. Kaplan worked with his SBDC consultant, Carroll Cobb to prioritize the issues concerning his business. The first priority after getting the business reopened was to implement new cash management strategies to speed up cash flow and maximize the efficiency of cash utilization to offset the impact of reduced revenues.  At the same time, Mr. Kaplan worked diligently with his banker, Mr. Marvin Langston at Hometown Bank of Galveston and other creditors to "buy time" until the business could recover insurance settlements that were long delayed or denied following the storm.

 The second priority was to implement a marketing strategy to recapture some of the lost customers, gain new customers, and expand the sales from existing customers.  The printing industry has undergone enormous changes during the past five years.  Customers are now able to print many documents for themselves that previously were sent out to printers.  On-line printing companies also pose a competitive challenge.  At the same time, the cost of paper and printing supplies has increased.  The Kaplans, Frank (Leon's brother) & Arriene (Leon's sister-in-law) have worked very hard with their consultant Carroll Cobb to devise and implement a strategy to overcome these challenges.

The result of all these efforts is that the business has survived, a significant amount of capital has been invested, and six jobs have been saved.

Many businesses are started by a person who has developed a product that they think fulfills a need, or by a person who has a special skill they believe can be marketed.  Often they will spend months, even years perfecting their product or honing their skill, but almost no time in developing a marketing strategy.  It is crucial to the success of a new business that the owner know:

 

(1) Who is going to buy this product for service?

(2) What is my unique SOB (Statement of Benefit)?

(3)  What is the most efficient and effective means of reaching my         market?

(4)  How should I price my product to be competitive?

(5)  How can I predict sales and profits?

(6)  How can I assess the effectiveness of my marketing campaign?

 

Your GCSBDC consultant can help you answer these questions and plan your marketing campaign.  We have the resources of the University of Houston network, including a dedicated research librarian, to assist us in gathering marketing information.  We offer classes in marketing, both traditional and internet marketing, and we will help you develop your marketing message.  As you prepare your business plan, with the guidance of your advisor, you will learn how to predict sales and profits.  You will also learn the difference between profits and cash flow.  And you will set up a system for monitoring the effectiveness and the cost/benefit ratio of the various marketing strategies you employ.

Once your plan is devised and your system for monitoring results is in place, your plan must be implemented.  Whether you handle your own sales or hire sales representatives to deliver your message, the key to success is to persevere without exception.  You can never let up on marketing.  You must be relentless in pursuit of sales.  When you make a sale, go right on to the next one.  When you don't make a sale, go right on to the next one. 

As we enter a new year together, let us focus on increasing sales and profits.  Certainly this is a challenge during a slow economy...but the economy will not remain slow forever and we cannot use the slow economy as an excuse for poor performance.   Thriving during an economic slowdown is a true hallmark of a good manager.
