This spring has been an exceptionally busy time for me as I have been working hard to get my new business off the ground. It seems like there are never enough hours in the day for everything that I want to accomplish. Thanks to my health counselor I have been reminded that it's important to make time to slow down and nurture myself no matter how busy I am. I am finding that when I slow down it's a whole lot easier to access my creativity and get to the fun stuff... like this newsletter!

This is the first of what will be a monthly newsletter containing articles on health and well-being, recipes, special offers as well as news about Watertown Holistic Health.

Summer Eating

As the weather gets hotter, we naturally begin eating more raw foods such as salads and fruit. A diet of primarily raw fruits and vegetables will help you feel lighter, aid in weight loss and keep you cool.

A great summer diet contains lots of fresh fruits, multi-colored salads and vegetables, some seeds, nuts, and grains, and less dairy products and meats.

Fruit is a great way to satisfy our taste for sweetness.  Fruits are easy to digest, are cleansing and cooling and are great for those who are overstressed and overheated from excessive mental strain or hot climates. Fruits are filled with fiber and liver stimulants, which act as natural, gentle laxatives. Whenever possible, buy fresh, locally grown organic fruit as opposed to imported fruits shipped from far-off places. This keeps you eating in season, and more in harmony with your environment and climate.

Fruit in the form of juice is a great choice for cleansing the body, but be aware that juice rapidly raises blood sugar levels which can lead to an energy crash soon after. Frozen, whole, puréed or juiced fruit can make great summertime cool-down treats. Try having frozen grapes, make your own fruit popsicles or lime juice ice-cubes to put in iced tea!

Yummy Breakfast Smoothie
This is a super easy summertime breakfast that is delicious! It takes 5 minutes to make and fills me up for 4-5 hours thanks to the addition of protein (protein powder, flax seed, and almonds). It can also be frozen into popsicles for a healthy frozen treat.

1 banana
Handful of berries or apple
1 cup rice/soy milk and/or coconut water
4 tblsp. protein powder
1 tblsp. flax seed/meal
1 tblsp. raw almond slivers
1 tblsp. raw cacao powder
Several ice cubes


Create a variety of smoothies:
  •  Take out the cacao to make it more fruity.
  • Use greens such as kale, swiss chard, spinach and collards instead of cacao to make a green smoothie.
  • Try different fruits.
Keeping Fit

It also feels more natural for most of us to get more exercise in the summertime. This is a great time of year to get into the exercise habit if you're not already!

Going outside for a walk for at least 15 minutes every day will replenish your Vitamin D stores and give you a break in your workday.

Does exercise seem like a chore?

Find ways to make it fun! Get a buddy to exercise with and hold you accountable. Hire a personal trainer to motivate you. Mix it up by trying out a new form of exercise or taking a class such as tai chi, yoga, pilates, hooping or bellydance.

Be careful to stay hydrated by drinking more water.  If you don't like the taste of water, you can add a lemon or cucumber slice for natural flavoring. Another great summertime drink is coconut water as it contains the full electrolyte balance without as much sugar as energy drinks. Watch out for "health" drinks like Gatorade and Vitamin Water as they contain a lot of extra sugar and calories.
