Dear Neighbors and Friends,
Rye Farmers' Market - Update
We are thrilled to announce that The Rye Farmers Market will open on June 24th and will be held every Wednesday from 2 - 5:30pm in the town parking lot on the west side of the Rye Congregational Church.
Here are some highlights that distinguish the Rye Farmers Market:
Rye Harbor Lobster and Seaport Fish will be selling seafood. Applecrest Farm will have a wide variety of apple products available. White Heron Tea will have their wonderful organic teas and prepared foods. Buzz Bomb Spice Blends will bring organic spice blends and gluten-free baked goods. Sea View Farm will have locally raised bison, chicken and pork. Slivery Moon Creamery will bring their delicious assortment of raw milk cheeses. Skip's Cider Donuts will make fresh donuts right in front of you! Arbor Inn Bakery is an online bakery in Rye that ships delicious cakes, cookies, and bars and will bring their mouth-watering baked goods to the Rye Market. Yellow House Farm will have fresh poultry available once a month at the market.
Also distinctive to the Rye Farmers' Market are the many residents who have formed co-ops to bring products that are grown, raised and baked in Rye: Fresh eggs - we will be selling fresh eggs from several backyard chicken farmers in Rye. Fresh produce - we will have fresh fruits and vegetables from farmers in Rye. We are reclaiming the Rye tradition of farming. Fresh baked goods - come see the special goods baked by our Rye Bakers co-op.
All this plus a story hour for children with readers from the Rye Library and hands-on children's crafts.
We would appreciate donations of tables, baskets or market tents that are sitting around cluttering up your garage, basement or attic - just email me and we will come get whatever items you can share with our groups. Let me know if you need more information and see you at the market! Thank you, cheers, Jaci, ojgrote@me.com. |
The 2009 Summer Rye Energy Project - Home Grown - Update |
Home Grown: the backyard provision garden. So far 32 households, including a four-family community garden, have registered to take part in the 2009 Rye Energy backyard garden project.
In conjunction with the Rye Public Library, the Rye Energy Committee is inviting Rye residents to plant a summer vegetable garden. Herbalists, fruit growers, and orchard owners are also welcome to take part in the project.
As a way to reduce our carbon footprint and ensure fresh, healthy foods we are encouraging people in town to take up gardening. And to continue with our commitment to the area artists and because we believe that art transforms behavior, we are inviting area artists to paint or photograph these backyard gardens from June 15th through September 10th.
A gala opening and show of these works of art will be held at the Rye Public Library on Thursday evening, October 1st.
This is the last call...so, if you are a resident and interested in registering for the Home Grown project please contact Mimi White at mimiwhite@earthlink.net or at 964-6586. If you are an area artist and wish to paint, draw, or photograph the gardens please contact Magi Leland at magiallis@comcast.net. _____________________ __________________________________________________________ "To me it (gardening) is much like reading - one of those things you do for yourself all through your life. My grandmother gardened until she was 97 years old and her sister was 99 before she stopped gardening. My mother is 78 and gardening strong!" Mary Coombs, Rye Junior High Librarian. |
Rye Junior High School Open Garden - Tuesday, June 16th |
The Rye Junior High School Community Garden is beautiful!
Come visit the garden on Tuesday, June 16th during the school's Celebration of Learning Day. Students will be giving guided garden tours throughout the day. In the evening the RJH chorus will perform a selection of garden related songs and the students hope to hold the premier of Seedfolks, a film by the RJH FilmFolks. The film is based on the book "Seedfolks" by Paul Fleischmann. It tells the heartwarming story of a diverse community garden.
The RJH garden will be part of the Rye Energy Committee's 2009 Home Grown Project.
The garden is a collaboration between the RJH students, faculty, families, and community. It provides an outdoor classroom where students and community can work and learn together.
