At 40, Dawn Galbreath of Saugus had it all: happy marriage, healthy children, successful career. She also had a lump in her breast.
Though her primary care physician had assured Galbreath it was just normal aging breast tissue, she couldn't let it go. "I just knew it didn't feel right," she said.
Galbreath was motivated to seek a mammogram at the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center on the campus of Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia in 2007. When the results showed an abnormality, a biopsy and second mammogram were scheduled.
Ultimately, Galbreath's cancer was diagnosed as Stage III, which required an initial lumpectomy, followed by a mastectomy and simultaneous reconstructive surgery, performed by Dr. Gregory Senofsky, director of the Breast Institute in Valencia and a staff physician at Henry Mayo.
"Dr. Senofsky was fabulous. He was the first doctor I met with after the diagnosis and he made me very comfortable. He treated me very well," Galbreath said.
When the cancer was found in five lymph nodes, chemotherapy and radiation were added to Galbreath's regimen. Bolstered by family and friend's support, Galbreath didn't cry when she started to lose her hair. Instead, she shaved it into a Mohawk and died it purple, then found a striking blonde wig to temporarily replace her own lustrous locks.
"Faith, hope, a healthy sense of humor and my wonderful support team - including the best physicians, surgeons and clinicians - got me through the toughest moments," Galbreath said. "There's just no elegant way to put it, having cancer stinks. Nevertheless, through my journey, I have met the most incredible people. In the end, there has been far more laughter than tears."
Galbreath is sharing her journey with women across the Santa Clarita Valley throughout October as the 2010 breast cancer awareness testimonial speaker for Henry Mayo's Health Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps to raise funds for the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center and Henry Mayo Hospital. A fear of public speaking made Galbreath initially reluctant to accept the testimonial position, but she soon relented. "I thought, oh no, I don't speak in public, it's not my forte, but I knew I wanted to help, to give back," she said.
The Foundation's 2010 breast cancer awareness benefit project is a $100,000 digital specimen radiography system for the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center. The system will allow surgeons to place a biopsy on the imager and digitally submit to a radiologist for immediate analysis, reducing the time a patient is kept under anesthesia. Click here to help make this purchase possible with a donation to the Center.
In addition to raising funds, Galbreath, now a two-year cancer survivor, is hoping to raise awareness in the community of the world-class cancer facilities available at Henry Mayo.
"I can't imagine having to travel for treatment. It was priceless to have medical services so close to home. Most of my surgeries and all of my chemotherapy and radiation treatments were done on the Henry Mayo campus," she said. "It made my cancer experience much less traumatic. We have the best of the best right here in our own hometown." |

| Special Cash Mammogram Pricing in October |
Type caption text here. | What's one good way to plan for your future? Take care of your health today.
In celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center is offering a special cash price for digital screening mammograms during October. In addition, the Center has grants and other programs available for patients who are uninsured or underinsured and need financial assistance for screenings.
According to the American Cancer Society, timely screenings can reduce breast cancer mortality in women age 40 and older by 17 to 30%. With no history of breast cancer in the family, women should schedule an annual mammogram at age 40. Beginning at the age of 20, women are recommended to have a clinical breast exam by their medical provider, and discuss options for screenings if they have a history of breast cancer in their family.
Appointments can be scheduled Monday through Friday, including lunchtimes and into the evening, as well as some weekends, by calling 661-253-8822. The Imaging Center is located at 23929 McBean Parkway, Suite 101, Valencia.
