Dear Families,
Summer smells like barbecue, chlorine, and citronella candles. It sounds like the constant buzz of air conditioning mixed with children's laughter, the splash of the pool, and calls for "Dinner!" Summer reminds us of the things that are meant to be shared: potato salad, watermelon, and sunscreen. The relentless heat reminds us that we live in a desert, where every time you walk outside, you deserve a popsicle.
On Independence Day, patriotic flags remind military families of a lot of things too: thankfulness to live in America, the ache of deployment, the exuberant pride in our military, and confidence in our Marines and Sailors who wear the uniform to defend the flag. For this and for them, we pause and remember. Whether it is in a stopped car watching the evening colors or at a 4th of July Day parade with children lining the streets, we remember.
This month, Marine Corps Family Team Building remembers with you and celebrates our service members and their families. Our Hearts Apart deployment support groups for adults and children continue to meet weekly as a way to recognize the challenges and victories of deployment. We are in this together! Call 269-6544 for more information. Also, check out our class schedule below, which features this month's kickoff of the new Friday Fit Club and Self Defense series.
As we celebrate independence this July, thank you for supporting and enabling the fight for freedom. Marine Corps Family Team Building is constantly impressed with your resilience and strength amidst the unpredictability of the military life. As always, we are here to help you BLOOM in shades of red, white and blue.

Deployment 101
This year, many of our families are facing deployment. Deployment can be overwhelming, especially when it feels like there are more questions than answers. Marine Corps Family Team Building is here to help. Here are our TOP FIVE recommendations as you prepare for deployment.
1. Know your FRO! If you don't know who your unit's Family Readiness Officer is, call our office (269-6550) to find out. The FRO is the first point of contact for all important deployment information. Make sure you have his/her name, phone number, and e-mail in a safe and memorable place.
2. Go to the Pre-Deployment Brief! It is at this brief that you will get an overview of essential deployment preparations and information from the Command on the nature and scope of the deployment.
3. Visit Base Legal. It is here that you can fill out a Power of Attorney and Family Care Plan.
4. Submit your children's paperwork for drop-in care at the Child Development Center (CDC). Twice a month the CDC offers free childcare for deployed families and they offer reasonable pricing for ongoing drop-in care.
5. Don't do deployment alone! Take the time to make local connections with others who are experiencing deployment too! Marine Corps Family Team Building offers several classes, including the Hearts Apart program, where you can meet other deployed family members. Your unit will also host family days and events to help you get connected. |
Free Childcare for Families with a Deployed Marine
OEF Childcare is a program designed to provide respite childcare to the families of deployed Marines. This is a FREE service for families that meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Marine is active duty and deployed (not TAD)
- Marine is out-of -state for 30 days or more (For example: Enhanced Mojave Viper)
- A copy of the Orders of Mission/Deployment Roster has been provided to the CDC
- Family has completed and submitted a 2011 Drop-In Packet to the CDC
In the past, reservations for OEF childcare have been on a "first come, first serve" basis. Unfortunately, this method does not always present an equal opportunity for all families to register. As a result, policies have changed to allow all families a reasonable chance to register and take advantage of this wonderful program. The following changes will become effective on July 1, 2011:
- OEF Childcare will be offered from 12-6pm on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month
- Reservations can only be made Monday-Friday
- If OEF Childcare is used on the 2nd Saturday of the month, that family will not be allowed to register for OEF Childcare for the 4th Saturday until Wednesday of the following week. This allows new families the opportunity to register first on Monday and Tuesday.
If you have any questions regarding the new OEF Childcare policies or to register, please contact the Child Development Center at 269-3234 or 269-3251. |

Deployment Activity for Kids
No matter how long the separation, time spent apart from your loved one makes it difficult to stay connected. It is nearly impossible to remember every time you say "We need to remember to tell Daddy this." These life stories can often be forgotten or overlooked as time goes on during a deployment. So just how do you keep track of them? Creating a Homecoming Box is a fun and easy solution. A Homecoming Box is a great place for both kids and parents to save memories in a safe place until the deployed parent returns.
It's simple...
- Decorate any box!
- Start collecting the memories such as (movie stubs, sea shells found at the beach, plane tickets)
- Add them to the box
Once the deployed parent returns, the Homecoming Box can be shared with the parent and all the exciting stories come back to life! This activity is great for reconnecting and catching up! |
Marine Corps Life FAQ
Why can't my Marine go out without shaving?
The U.S. Marine Corps is known for its polished appearance. In an effort to keep up with that image, the USMC has issued guidelines (Guidelines for Marines and MCO P1020.34G) for what Marines can wear on base and off base, regardless of duty status. These instructions include prohibiting Marines from running errands in camouflage uniforms. It also prohibits Marines from wearing certain civilian clothing, such as lingerie style tops and low rise pants. The Marine code not only stipulates what Marines can wear, it also specifies certain conduct standards. For example, a Marine in uniform can't eat, chew gum, or use any tobacco products while walking and are prohibited from going out without shaving. |
