Dear Families,

The royal wedding is everywhere! Much of the world watched with breathless wonder as Prince William married Kate Middleton on April 29th. But what was the appeal for Americans whose closest ties to the royal family are a movie night with "The King's Speech" or a class in European history? Perhaps it was the allure of generations of tradition.  Or was it the glamour of an ornate uniform paired with a beautiful gown?  Maybe it is the history revisited with every detail of the ceremony.  Do some of these things sound familiar? The uniform, the tradition, the history?

Many of us have experienced the magic of a uniform paired with a beautiful gown (Even if it wasn't designed by Alexander McQueen).  We have swelled with pride when history is respected and revisited in detailed ceremonies, like at the Marine Corps Ball.  We have patiently tutored family members through the hierarchical system of rank, just like the Brits have taught us about all of their monarchs named George or Elizabeth. Others have watched our lifestyle with intrigue and mystique as we have learned to embrace it.

May  6th is home to Military Spouse Appreciation Day. And although we don't earn a title like "Duchess" when we marry into the military, we do gain a proud new moniker: military spouse. Marine Corps Family Team Building celebrates you this month. And whether your wedding day occurred down the aisle of a beautiful cathedral, under the harsh lights of a courthouse, or in a drive-thru Vegas chapel, you are our very own royalty.

Kids Corner

With multiple deployments in 2011 parents are searching for resources to ease the stress on our littlest Heroes, our military children. There are many great stories that help explain deployment and the sacrifices the whole family is making.  My Dad's A Hero is just one of the many great titles you can find at your MCAS Yuma Library.

My Dad's A Hero written by Rebecca Christiansen is a wonderful story for families with a deployed parent. This book focuses on the positive aspects of a parent's deployment - what they eat, where they sleep, what they are doing for others, how to keep in touch, etc...  This story emphasizes the sacrifices children make during deployment; they are heroes too! The story and the illustrations will captivate children of all ages and help them feel better about being away from their parent. This story is highly recommended!

FAQFrequently Asked Questions

Whether based in tradition, etiquette, or Marine Corps Order; there are numerous tidbits of information that are important in navigating the military lifestyle.  Be sure to check out the new FAQ section each month for answers to our most Frequently Asked Questions.

While I was in line at the commissary the other day, a Marine was allowed to go to the head of the line.  Why was he able to skip ahead?

Active duty service members receive front-of-the-line privileges while in uniform. This means that if a service member shops at the commissary while on duty or on lunch hour, he may proceed to the front of any line in the store without waiting.
