Dear Families,

With fall, comes changing leaves and frosted glass, or at least that's the nostalgic image that comes to mind. Although we may not witness the typical signs of fall here in Yuma, this season also brings Thanksgiving, which adds a sense of purpose to the season. In the midst of seasonal change, there are many reasons to be thankful. At Marine Corps Family Team Building (MCFTB), we have seen this attitude of thanksgiving modeled over and over again in military spouses.

It is with the spirit of thanksgiving that MCFTB wants to say thank you to military spouses on behalf of those you have served. Thank you, military spouses, for enduring your Marine's long working hours and for moving to strange and distant locales like Yuma, Arizona.  Thank you for learning to pay the bills and fix faulty plumbing when your Marine is away. Thank you for attending mandatory briefs, balls, dining-ins, and unit functions. Thank you for carrying more than you should, for enduring exhaustion, sick children, a tight budget, and poorly trained pets.   Thank you for sacrificing equally, if not greater, than that of our Marines, even if you don't wear the uniform.

This fall, even if you find yourself wishing for better things (maybe a White Christmas?), remember that as a military spouse, you are able to transport the thanksgiving spirit with you wherever you are. Surely all of us have a long list of reasons to be thankful this November, and as a military spouse, your name has certainly been written on several "thankful" lists.

                                                         Your MCFTB Team,

Thanksgiving Facts, Figures, and Folklore

thanksgiving

The Pilgrims' trip to the New World aboard the Mayflower lasted 65 days.

In 1863, President Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday of November a national day of thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving didn't become an official national holiday until more than 200 years later.

First hitting New York City's streets in 1924, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade celebrates its 86 anniversary this year.

Originally, the huge Macy's Day Parade Thanksgiving Day balloons were released at the end of the parade. The grandiose balloons had attached address labels. The lucky people who found and returned the balloons received Macy's gift certificates for $100 or some other prize.

Americans raise over 256 million turkeys, 649 million pounds of cranberries, 1.6 billion pounds of sweet potatoes, and 998 million pounds of pumpkin annually.

It is tradition for US Presidents to issue a pardon a turkey the day before Thanksgiving.  Afterwards, the turkeys are sent to live out their life on a Disneyland ranch!  They have even served as the honorary grand marshals for Disneyland's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Arrive Alive!
drunkdriving
Before you leave the house for your Birthday Ball, make sure you and your Marine have a plan on how you will get home safely.  If you don't have a trustworthy  designated driver, consider your choices:
-Many units are having vans go between the ball and base. Ask your Marine or Family Readiness Officer if your unit is participating.
-Your Marine's "Arrive Alive" Card has the numbers of local cab companies.  Don't have cash?  Your Marine can show his/her card or ID and pay for the taxi later.
One drink is too many!  Please be safe!
