Originating in 17th century Russia as Russian Ice Slides, large wooden structures with a 50 degree ramp covered in ice. Riders climbed up the back and slid down the front. The first official one was created in France in 1817. The first one to operate in the United States started in Pennsylvania in 1873. First made of wood and now made of metal and composite materials they have become the favorite attraction of many theme parks. Todays have inventive names such as "The Riddler", "Colossus", "Goliath", "Ghostrider", "Silver Bullet", and "Space Mountain". |
