July 2010

Dear Families,
Fourth of July sparks memories of watermelon, fireworks, and curbside parades. It brings to mind kids with red Popsicle-stained lips and sticky fingers running around the yard in a haze of barbeque smoke. It is a time of celebration that brings family and friends together.

More importantly, Independence Day is a moment where the entire nation stops to remember both the cost and value of freedom.  For military families, this holiday is a reminder of the very reason for which our Marines fight and their families persevere through the unique challenges of the military lifestyle: it's all for independence.

Independence is a privilege that our military personnel and their families preserve through their service. It is also a unique character trait of the men and women who hold down the home front while their Marines are away in the fight. This special holiday warrants the recognition not only of the brave men and women in uniform, but also the equally heroic family members supporting them and enabling them to fight.

If you are interested in honing your self-sufficient skills, consider joining us for a Safe at Home: Women's Self Defense class on July 22nd 6:00-8:00pm. The activity-based class will teach tips for personal safety and basic self-defense moves taught by Marine MCMAPP instructors.  Or, build upon your physical strength by joining us for Friday Fit Club, which starts a new 6-week cycle on July 16th.

Thank you for supporting and enabling the fight for freedom. Marine Corps Family Team Building is constantly impressed with your independence and strength amidst the unpredictability of the Marine Corps Life. As always, we are here to help you BLOOM in shades of red, white and blue.

                                                                     Your MCFTB Team,

Kate, Bekah, Brooke, Bree & Sarah

doggiePet Safety

As we enter the month of July, we become increasingly aware of just how extremely hot Yuma can be in the summer.  Your pets rely on you to keep them safe. By following a few summer safety tips, you can ensure that your four-legged friends stay healthy this summer and enjoy those long, hot dog-days of summer.

Never leave your pet in the car.  Even though it may not seem too hot outside, the inside of a vehicle can reach temperature of over 120 degrees in a matter of minutes.                                              Make sure your pet has plenty of water. Regularly check water bowls both inside and outside of your home. Make certain that the water is cool and clean.                                                                                                 Pets need sunscreen too.  While fur can protect some of your pet's skin, they can become sunburned, particularly if they have light skin and hair. To protect your pet from being sunburned, apply sunscreen to unprotected areas like the tips of their ears, that skin around their lips, and the tip of their nose.                                                                                              Watch out for antifreeze.  Cars can leak antifreeze onto the streets if they overheat in the summer. Antifreeze has a sweet smell and taste that animals love, but it is extremely toxic.                                                               Watch for heatstroke.  Heatstroke can be fatal to your pet. If you suspect, your pet may be suffering from heatstroke, contact your veterinarian immediately. Signs of heatstroke can include: panting, staring, high fever, rapid heartbeat, collapse or vomiting.
