Dear Families, The old saying goes... if March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb. Although this phrase usually refers to the weather, the conversion from the gentleness of a lamb to the ferocity of a lion is a transformation a lot of military spouses experience. Let's be honest, although we love our Marines and Sailors, most of us didn't fully understand all that we signed up for when we fell in love with that uniform. A lot of us came in as wide-eyed lambs-- being shuffled to a new duty station, learning the foreign language of acronyms, and establishing a new life in the military. However, our time as naïve lambs was short-lived. The challenges of military life could do nothing but instill a strength and courage in each military spouse that more closely resembles the character of a lion.
A military spouse, like a lion, has to be tough. Whether that means holding it together during deployment, fighting for coverage with Tricare, surviving a PCS move (or even a DITY move!!) or any other military obstacle, this life requires the audacity of a lioness.
Nature echoes the disposition of military spouses/lionesses. According to Wikipedia, "lionesses do the majority of the hunting for their pride, being smaller, swifter and more agile than the males, and unencumbered by the heavy and conspicuous mane, which causes overheating during exertion. They act as a coordinated group in order to stalk and bring down the prey successfully."
Together, military spouses are integral members of our "pride" of military families. In the month of March, Marine Corps Family Team Building is offering several classes that support families in our "pride." Come test your strength with a Self Defense workshop or learn how to care for others in your "pride" in case of an emergency by getting CPR certified.
No matter how you choose to develop your good instincts as a lioness this March, remember that although you came into the military as a meek lamb, from now on you will conquer as a resilient lioness.

Lamb to Lioness
They enjoyed their first three years of blissful, deployment-free marriage. Then, in typical Marine Corps fashion, Shane got pregnant and Travis got a seven-month Float. More than 11 years later, Shane recalls the experience that defined her transition from timid newbie to fearless Marine spouse.
On the day of Travis's departure, Shane dropped him and his bags at the curb in New River and sped off without a backward glance. After talking to experienced wives who prepared her for the standard tribulations deployment would bring, her gut was twisted in knots of worry. That nauseas feeling never seemed to subside. Nervousness turned to morning sickness, which turned to something more serious. Shane endured month after month of continuous vomiting and urinary tract infections that warranted overnight hospital stays hooked up to IVs as often as twice a week, where was poked and prodded by strangers. She ached as well for the comforts of her own home... and her loving husband.
After a hellacious seven months, Travis returned home... and the very next day Shane went into labor. She was again confronted with the unexpected: no time for an epidural! Weighing five pounds, Paige arrived two hours after Shane checked into the hospital.
Now stationed at MCAS Yuma, Travis jokes that he missed the worst parts but made it to enjoy the best parts. As for Shane, despite the trauma she endured, she discourages couples from trying to "time" a pregnancy. "There will never be a good time, especially not in the military," says Shane. "Timing puts an additional, unnecessary strain on a relationship." Now 11 years old, Paige is a reminder to Shane of her own courage and perseverance... personality traits that Paige will be quite fortunate to inherit.
