Dear Families,
The heat is on! While the rest of the country begins counting down to fall, August continues to bring 100+ temperatures to Yuma. Regardless of the heat, Marine Corps Family Team Building is constantly impressed by how MCAS Yuma families continue to Bloom. MCFTB is proud to offer exciting and relevant programs this summer that will help your family continue to flourish.
In this issue of Bloom, check out the feature story on Jacey Eckhart. This nationally renown author and military spouse will be visiting Yuma on September 17th to host a motivational workshop. In addition, Operation: Ball Gown is fast approaching. Your help is requested- we need models, volunteers, and donated gowns!
MCFTB is also offering "Beyond the Brief," a 5-part series that goes into depth on topics relevant to military families. They are held the 3rd Wednesday of each month. Call to register for "Combat Operational Stress Control" on August 19th from 1800-2000. This important class discusses stress your Marine may experience and how you can help him/her cope and when to seek help.
Remember, classes at MCFTB are always free. With timely registration, childcare is also available at no charge. Registration for classes is required, but has never been easier. Simply click on the "Register for Classes Here" link or call us at 269-6550.
In the midst of the unique challenges life in the Marine Corps brings, from hectic deployment schedules to PCSing, MCFTB is here to help you BLOOM!

SPARTANS! RAISE YOUR SHIELDS!
Jacey Eckhart is back with a new program so sit back and relax - it's not death by PowerPoint - it's a fun, interactive workshop on the New Spartan way of life!
|
On the morning of Thursday, September 17, 2009, Jacey will kick off another Spouses Learning Series with a twist. This year, there will be two programs: Building Spartans: Hard-Core Decision Making for Marines, 0830-0930. Get the gouge on the New Spartan way of life with humor writer Jacey Eckhart. In less than an hour, discover an easier way to get parents, spouses, kids and the hot chick down the street on board with your career. Why Are We Doing This??! Get a Meaning Shape Up For Your Military Life, 1000-1300 for family members. The first time you get ready for a deployment or a move there is a secret piece of excitement in it. A little drama. A bit of hope. By the third time, the fourth time, the fifth time all that might be left is the question: Why are we doing this? All this in only three hours! Both workshops will be held at the Sonoran Pueblo and breakfast/snacks will be provided. As with all MCFTB workshops, free childcare is available. Please contact Lori at 269-6550 to register for the class or register online.

Kids and Deployments |
Deployments take a toll on all family members, children included. In an effort to support Marine Corps kids and their parents, MCFTB is now offering Pre-Deployment and Return & Reunion programs for children ages 6 and older. While parents attend the adult Pre-Deployment and Return & Reunion briefs, Kids-N-Deployment and Kids-N-Reunion programs will take place simultaneously in an adjacent room at the same location. These workshops give children an opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings about deployments with other military kids. They will participate in a host of fun and interactive activities including journaling, banner making, and letter writing, that will build confidence and develop coping skills to help them deal with the challenges of a deployment or reunion.
For children under six, free childcare is available. Registration for this workshop and childcare is required by calling MCFTB. For more information about your Unit's brief, contact your Family Readiness Officer!
Looking for more resources to help children cope with a deployment? There are many great resources. Visit MilitaryOneSource for free articles, CDs and DVDs, booklets, and weblinks about children and deployment.

Friendships- Built to Last |
The Marine Corps Community is such a small world. I've know that my whole life because I grew up in it, but it means more to me now than it did back then. You make friends here and there but nothing compares to the bond in friendship you make when you survive your first deployment together. I have one very best friend that I have now survived 4 deployments with, so you can imagine how devastated I was when she told me she and her family had orders to Cherry Point, North Carolina! I cried and cried! How was I going to survive a deployment without her!?!?! I helped my friend pack her things and watched as she drove away. Because she became such a huge part of my life, I kept in touch with her often. We would call frequently, write letters, IM everyday, and have once a year "Girls Weekend" trip. This is the kind of friend you cannot lose. Two years later... My husband brought home the news that we have orders... to CHERRY POINT!!! I immediately called my friend to tell her the good news!! She was as ecstatic as I am!! Moving and leaving your friends is hard but if you plan to stay in the Marine Corps Community, there is a very good chance that you could run into them again sometime in the near future! And you never know... you may even live on the same street again... like my friend and I will!
